jump rope

I am trying to get back in shape. I would like to make jumping rope a part of my routine. I am not sure what kind of rope to get exactly. Some people recommend the leather ropes w/weighted ball bearings.

 

I do a mix of tae kwon do, karate, and kickboxing if that affects your answer.

go with a 3/4 in. diameter peice of rope.

 

the wight diference gives you arms a workout as well as your legs.

Spot on Bdaze. You should use a normal peice of rope for skipping. I know its suprising, but normal rope is much better than most "skipping ropes" you'll come across. With rope you're able to skip faster and get a better workout because it's heavier. Maybe the leather rope with ball bearings would be good, i've never tried one. But don't buy an ordinary skipping rope, they are defective if your trying to actually skip FAST to get fit. Try both and see which works for you, I think you'll find the normal rope is much better, I know I did.

Is there a specific type of rope I should get? I would assume the hardware store is probably the best place to buy this. Do you wrap the ends of the rope in electrical tape or something?

 

Also, do you guys know of any good jump rope routines? I'm also wondering how often I should be jumping rope and for what duration.

 

Also, how do you determine the correct length of rope? I've heard that if you stand on the center of the rope you should be able to touch the ends to your armpits. I guess I could just try it out and see what feels best.

I am not trying to discount anyones tips on this thread, but I jump rope alot, and here is my suggestion. Just a plain old speed rope.

They are plasctic and cheap, and you can get them at any store that sells sporting goods. You should not be swinging your arms so don't worry about weighted ropes. When you are jumping the only thing that should be moving is your wrists. I have a ring timer, and that is how I train. I will set the timer for 2, 3, or 4 minute rounds with a 30 second rest in between. If you don't have a ring timer you can get CD's with the ring timers sound on it. If you want a really good workout practice a certain kick while in between the rounds. Contact me if you want more information.
