Evil_Gorilla Posted August 8, 2003 Author Posted August 8, 2003 I do try to do that, I breath on a few but then go right back to my old ways, and as for passing out only done it twice, I can go normal 45-50 pushups or 60 situps then I start getting dizzy. "Wow nice move!"*SMACK*"But your to flashy"
Bart the Lover Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 Glad I'm not the only one! I have a habit of holding my breath doing push-ups, too. I haven't really fixed it yet, but it helps to breathe in time with the push-up or sit-up. Breathe in when lowering yourself, and out when straightening your arms. Try to concentrate on the breathing rather than the counting. Maybe you could do push-ups for a period of time, instead of a set number, so you can forget about counting. Hope this helps. Regards, Bart the Lover
wrestlingkaratechamp Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 when you go down breathe in and when you go up breathe out.

Do you have the same problem when practicing basics or techniques, or sparing?Get your instructor to show you some relaxation and breathing exercises, and maybe some meditations that focus on breathing. If you can find someone to show you some basic qigong (chi kung) it would probably help. Freedom isn't free!
monkeygirl Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 There's no shame in forgetting to breathe! It's just another training hurdle you'll have to overcome. Get a patient partner to monitor your breathing, since you seem to have troubles remembering to do it yourself. It'll feel awkward at first, but you need to force yourself to breathe until it becomes habit. Exhale as you lift into the crunch, inhale as you come back down. Same for push-ups: exhale as you lift with the push-up, inhale as you come back down. Also, make sure you have proper form in your crunches: lifting with your stomach and not your neck, keeping your jaw facing the ceiling. If your chin is tucked into your chest, you'll have difficulties breathing, which may be why you're forgetting to breathe. When concentrating on proper breathing, I've found that I can do twice the amount of push-ups than when I don't focus on my breathing. 1st dan & Asst. Red J Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 I think this is pretty common. You really need to concentrate on breathing during these exercises. Constant practice doing this will make it become second nature. It's a mindset change to not think of the exercise, but your breathing. Good luck. I had to lose my mind to come to my senses.
cross Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 record yourself saying "breathe in, breathe out" and listen to it with a walkman when your training. hehehe, just kidding.
