I am a bit of a computer dunce but I would like to create a website for my current association and the club that I attend. Obviously I would like the site to be professional looking but I do not want to pay someone to do it for me.

So how do I go about it? Can I just buy software and create? Help me!

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

If so, 'Publisher' works well for creating websites. It comes bundled in Office.

HTML is a very simple and quick programming language to learn, and it will definitely pay off. Pages load faster because the script is clean (unlike most programs which add in tons of unnecessary script), and you have much better control over the look and feel of the page.

My brother learned HTML from http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/basics.html, and then he taught it to me.

Yeah, the web design guys at my company have switched to DreamWeaver and seem to really like it. They used to use MS FrontPage, which produced some incredibly bloated and messy junk, DreamWeaver is definitely a million times cleaner than THAT.

By the way, I know a gal with no web design skills/experience who successfully designed a whole site with DreamWeaver, and still doesn't know a thing about HTML.

Dreamweaver is the best but don't forget it comes with a £350 price tag in the UK. If you're just starting out Telsun try NetObjects Fusion, my site was created with fusion 4 and the html is OK and the page loads fast enough..then save those pennies for Dreamweaver althouth im finding it quite hard to learn..

Well a friend will soon have a copy of Macromedia studio MX 2004 which includes Dreamweaver, or so I am told.

As I stated b4 I am completely naive, so I have a couple more questions:

What are domain names?

What is web hosting?

How do I get a site online?

Can a site generate money or will it only cost me money?

Anything else that you think maybe relevant will be much appreciated.

Please excuse my innocence

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

The most common ways for a site to generate money is through donations, or by putting up another company's ads.

telsun, for someone who was going to go off line for a while you have certainly picked a subject that is more addictive than forums.

What are domain names?

A domain name is a unique address on the internet. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates your domain name into the numerical IP (Internet Protocol) addresses used by the Internet. A domain name can be used as a web address for webpages and will be part of your email address. There are many different types of domain extensions such as .COM, .NET, and .CA to name a few. An example of a domain name would be http://www.karateforums.com. The unique web address would be https://www.starlite.com. E-mail addresses would include the domain name and could include: info@starlite.com, sales@starlite.com, or brent@starlite.com

You purchase a domain name from a domain name registrar costs around $9.00 / year US

There are many out there, I sometimes use https://www.directnic.com to purchase my domain names.

What is web hosting?

For a website to be seen on the internet, it needs a web server to reside on. When people visit a website they are actually accessing files on this web server. Web hosting can be thought of as renting space on a web server.

Web Hosting Talk http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ is a popular forum for the hosting industry. Both web hosting consumers and providers hang out there.

Ask lots of questions before purchasing web space as there are a lot of people out there who will try to rip you off.

How do I get a site online?

If you are asking how do you transfer files from your computer to your web space, this can be done several ways. Most web making type programmes have built in file transferring facilities, else you can use a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) type programme to transfer your files.

Can a site generate money or will it only cost me money?

Both, take a look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ sometime you can get limited web space for free without the advertising.

Hope this helps.
