Black vs. White Gi

Sho-ju

Recommended Posts

In many Okinawan styles white gis are for everyone and black ones for the yudansha. You can mix black pants with a white top or vice-versa. It's just clothes and to "put you in the mood", 'nawmean? Traditionally the Okinawans wore just their "drawers", which looked like a big diaper. Some wore everyday clothes and with the advent of the Budo structure of Judo, eventually gis. I guess there really is no official standard and it varies from dojo to dojo and style to style. I like them both!!! Yin and Yang you know...

My 2 cents: White Gi’s look like crap by the end of a tough work out. This is just my Master, but we wear Black Gi’s for Training, and have white gi’s for formal occasions, like Tournaments, demonstrations, rank examinations. The black gi’s just seem to hold up more, aesthetic wise.

The black gis will make everyone accuse you of trying to be a ninja - as if MA's don't get enough already, so I stick to plain white, and if it ends up a mess well that just shows how hard you've been working :)

or how poor your laundry skills are :D

Besides anyone that saw that American Ninja movie with the guy in the white ninja suit won't be stopped by that. Why not just not wear ANY uniform, train in shorts/track pants and a T-shirt.

Personally I think blue and red gi look the best. I once had an instructor who had a uniform custom made for him out of silk. Blue top with an embroidered dragon around the torso and white a bottom with black highlights. Very cool.

Generally though, if aestetics is your primary concern, get a Chinese dress uniform.
