AUSSIE Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Hey people, I started coming to these boards a few weeks ago after a friend told me about them. I am a newbie to MA but i'm starting taekwondo this week and i'm only 18 years old so I have plenty of time to get good. I just need to know a few things; What is kata? I noticed that Bruce Lee used to make these little squeeky chicken noises when he fought. Did he do this because it actually helps him to fight or focus or something? A friend told me something about how if you make the noises at certain frequencies it can help you punch harder or something. Was Bruce Lee a cocky arrogant kind of guy who just wanted to beat everyone up? Is it true that the Martial Art "Aikido" is taught like a complete religion and has lots of theory involved? What is the best martial arts movie? How long would it take to get really flexible so you can do high side kicks. Can any of you do the splits? Are most karate and taekwondo classes really just "Macdojo's" that wont make you very good, but make you pay a lot of money to get your belts?
iolair Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 What is kata? Sometimes called "forms", these are set sequences of techniques and movements used to practice techniques without an opponent. I noticed that Bruce Lee used to make these little squeeky chicken noises when he fought I've never known what that was all about!! Is it true that the Martial Art "Aikido" is taught like a complete religion and has lots of theory involved? Many martial arts seem to carry with them a slight to moderate tinge of eastern spirituality. I think some of the soft chiinese styles are markedely more so than Aikido. It varies a lot from club to club too... What is the best martial arts movie? You'll get almost as many answers as there are people here! "Enter the Dragon" (Bruce Lee) is probably one of the most highly regarded. How long would it take to get really flexible so you can do high side kicks. To kick your own head height probably takes about three months of twice daily dynamic stretching. I've heard other people say that it can take anything from weeks to years to never to reach maximum flexibility though. Can any of you do the splits? You'll find plenty here that can, I can't but as I can comfortably kick head height anyway it's not a target for me. Are most karate and taekwondo classes really just "Macdojo's" that wont make you very good, but make you pay a lot of money to get your belts? I think to say that most are is wrong, but there are a few rip-off merchants out there... Currently: Kickboxing and variants.Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
John G Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Firstly, welcome to the forums AUSSIE, I agree with most of what iolair said except for What is the best martial arts movie? The all time classic that every true martial artist should be forced to watch would have to be : Kung Pow enter the fist. …. John G Jarrett III Dan, ITF Taekwon-Do
martialartist1 Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 bruce lee made screaming or animalistic type sounds because he was expressing himself and really meaning all of his martial arts techniques and moves he made. some other martial artists of different styles also add like a haayaa sound to emphasise the technique thrown and showing there really is maximum effort in the techniques and moves.
UsagiYojimbo Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 Best martial arts movie: Legend of Drunken Master (the remake). This thread seems to be taking a soft approach, taking the original posters more potent questions and redirecting them... hmm...
IAMA_chick Posted July 22, 2003 Posted July 22, 2003 what kind of tae kwon do are you starting in? i was just wondering. and everyone anwsered the other questions, but i can do the splits. it doesn't take too long if you stretch a lot to get high side kicks. how high are you wanting them anyways? AUSSIE Posted July 23, 2003 Author Posted July 23, 2003 Well I wanna be able to kick high enough to knock people out, and some people are tall, so I need to kick real high. I just thought that the splits is the ultimate measure of flexibility, so it's a goal of mine to be able to do them. If I was flexible enough to do the splits then I'd be able to kick as high as is physically possible for me. I also reckon being able to walk on your hands is a great test of strength and balance for your ENTIRE body, not just upper body. So i've been practicing that every day for about a month or so and i'm almost adept at it. I don't know what type of taekwondo it is. By the way John G I live in Western Australia too.
battousai16 Posted July 23, 2003 Posted July 23, 2003 best martial arts movie? i've never seen it get any better than once upon a time in china. "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
