AS stated

The amateur shoots his hands out ferociously, but lacks any true power. A master is not so flamboyant, but his touch is as heavy as a mountain.

There's a little mental "trick" when it comes to developing speed in your punches:

First, make sure you're nice and relaxed. Tensing up your muscles will only slow you down. If you're merely in a point-sparring situation where power doesn't really matter, you'll want your fist to be somewhat loose inside your glove, almost as if you're just going to backhand your opponent. If you are required to keep a tight fist, do so, it won't slow you down TOO much.

Now that you're nice and relaxed, here comes the mental trick: focus on pulling your punch away THREE times as fast as you put it out there, as soon as it is extended. For example: If you throw your punch at oh say, 5fps (feet per second), AS SOON as the punch is fully extended, bring it back at 15fps. This kind of "whip" mentality will help you to increase the speed of throwing your punch, so that you'll soon be throwing it at 15fps, and bringing it back at 45fps. (hardy har I can multiply! :D)

Basically, it just helps to "think fast thoughts"!

Anyway, that's what I do and my hands are pretty fast. :)

Interesting monkeygirl :)

A couple of drills I have done:

Partner holds up a mitt, drops it and you hit it on the way down.

Face partner. He will try to hit you, as soon as you see him move hit him. Your punch should land first.

Focus mitts are great for thinking fast punches.

Punch bag is great for hard fast combos.

Be relaxed but alert.

As others have said there really is no big secret only practice.

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
