Depending on the art - if he's bigger, it can be easier to get in under his centre of gravity to do a takedown or a throw.

Anyway, going back to your question - yes, it's practice. The more you go into situations that scare you, the less you should get scared next time. Also, instead of trying to fight a seven-footer straight away, you can get experience of fighting those who are four-six, then when you get used to fighting them, five-footers, then five-six etc. Break your big goal into lots of smaller targets on the way there.

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

It's good that you pose a question. Ask your instructor to go through a couple of different scenarios so you can get a feel of what the possibilites are and how you would react. Look the opponent straight in the eye, smile at him, and just show him that you are going to win. They have to wonder what tricks you have up your sleeve and why you are going to beat him. It's good to get into his center of gravity and knock him off of it.

My advice is not to get into a ring until you are comfortable in one. Sounds like you are talking about sport fighting. You should be well versed in your art before entering a ring...you want your focus on your opponent, not on "what do I do now". Keep practicing!!

Good Luck!
