aes Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 At sparring class last night without foot/hand protection, I launched a front kick just as my opponent punched. The punch went across my 1st toe off of my big toe and made a loud "snap" sound. I continued sparring but had a very hard time kicking with this foot as it really hurt, but I also had a harder time kicking with the other foot due to the toes hurting lots and interfering with balance. I am not a run to the doctor kind of guy and don't think it is anything too serious. I suspect the toe popped out of the socket briefly and is back in now. The knuckle of it is a bit swollen and turning pretty purple and it still hurts a fair amount (limping a bit). I know people here are not doctors, but I am wondering what is it that likely happened? P.S. I still plan on going to regular class tonight even if I have to hop around a bit 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
Tibby Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 Sounds like it could be any number of things. You might have dislocated it, or broke up, or bruised it. How knows. Take some Ibuprofen to bring the inflamation down, ice it for 30 minutes a day, and tape it up when in class, ot keep it from moving around and being more damage. If the pain contenues, go to a doctor. I know you said your not a fan of doctors, but this could hender your Martial Arts in the future if your not carefull.
StoneSkin Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 I dont mean to get you worried but lets face facts. Your toe is most likely broken it will heal but then youll stub it or somethin and it will break again. You just have to learn to adapt to it, you wont kick like you used to it will feel differnt. Ive had a broken toe for a few years now ive talked to doctors about it and they dont really do much to treat a toe.
Gloi Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 I did something very similar a couple of months ago. I kicked and knocked my big toe into the other persons shin as they kicked and it made a real loud crack and hurt a lot. The next day it was sore and swollen at the joint and I think it must have partially dislocated and then popped back in again. It took about 2 weeks to be totally recovered. When I have broken toes (fortunately not the big toe) There was a lot more vivid bruising in the first day or 2 after it was done where the blood vessels in the bone have been bleeding. Of course the thing to do if you aren't happy with it is to go and get it x-rayed.
aes Posted July 10, 2003 Author Posted July 10, 2003 I talked to Kyoshi about it and showed him yesterday. He is pretty sure it is broken, but said doctors don't do much about it. They don't split it or anything and it will heal on it's own. Only recommendation was to tape it up before classes. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
newbalance Posted July 10, 2003 Posted July 10, 2003 Interesting. So broken toes require no medical attention? Is this only for the small four or Big toe and all?
aes Posted July 10, 2003 Author Posted July 10, 2003 Just smaller toes. Big toe is another ball game. Also my toe is still straight which also adds to not worrying about it too much. It is just very black and blue and sore. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
tommarker Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 i have a broken little toe on my left foot. mid level side kick during kumite, one of the junior students had just learned how to drop an elbow into the foot gave it about 1-2 months (still running 25 miles a week on it though) and hurt it again while hitting a target with a spinning crescent kick. I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
CheekyMusician Posted July 11, 2003 Posted July 11, 2003 Just smaller toes. Big toe is another ball game. Also my toe is still straight which also adds to not worrying about it too much. It is just very black and blue and sore. Even if it is still straight, it could still be broken. I've had a broken wrist and a broken big toe. The broken wrist was not swollen, bruised or misshapen. It was painful to move, but I could still move it with effort. The only thing that gave away the fact that it was broken was the constant, throbbing pain that wouldn't go away. As for my broken toe, I broke it across the joint, and again it wasn't bent, just very badly bruised and swollen. Now that it's healed it has a slight bend in it, though. The chances are if its a broken toe then a doc wont do much about it, but its worth getting checked out just in case its broken in an unusual place or something. After all, you don't want to be constantly pounding on it when you're training and only making it worse and worse. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
aes Posted July 17, 2003 Author Posted July 17, 2003 Dang, just as my right toe was starting to look less purple and start to heal... the exact toe on the other foot rolled under my foot in kata practice and got badly injured. I don't think I broke this one but gee it turned black, hurts and is making practicing very hard. 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
