Training and fitness schedule

Do any experienced MAists have any good, hard, daily training and fitness exercises. I'd like to start one to improve fitness. For example x number of pressups, x number of minutes on the bag etc. Oh and plz dont keep posting links to websites, as helpful as it is I'd be interested to discuss what kind of training people do.

it depends on the individual

 

back in the day when i was training hard.....

 

run 2- 7 miles with 2 fifty pound sand bags, one on each shoulder, i would run into the hills and into the forest at the top of the hill i would find a tree and connect one of the bags of sand to a branch with some rope and use it as a punching and kicking bag...beat on it until your hands and feet are pretty beat in.....truely depends on the individual, i would condition my fists and knuckles.....

 

i would also do 1500 sit ups a day, usually divided up in 2 sets and around 500 push ups, i would also have my partners in training beat me with 2x4s 100 times on all my muscles, arms. calves, upper arms, shoulders, chest, stomach, thighs, back and neck, i would also swim year round and build a tolerance to the cold, work kicks, strikes, katas and self defenses over and over, i would spar and grapple a lot too this was the major emphasis on my training...which we spent hours on.....now my training consisted of working out all day, so if you have school or a job it would be impossible to do the same that i did, yet you can get some ideas from this

Why wouldn't you believe him? If you had all day to train why couldn't you get all that done? Does it sound too tough to you and that is why you doubt? I had a sensei that trained like that in Hawaii every day. I know how much can be accomplished in even 1 or 2 hours if you have the proper mindset. :)

 

Me, I have only a few hours a day in my busy schedule to train. Minimally, I run 3 miles, do strength training, stretch, run through all kata & curriculum 2-3 times physically, then another 1-2 times mentally to wind down and go to sleep. Pretty basic but it works! :wink:

granmasterchen, are you a nutter or a master :) :) :) And you did not say what you are doing nowadays old man...........Respect to you :karate:

 

My training is so varied, I have no schedule at all. I'll just get in as many club sessions as I can during the week. I will run 1-3 miles, do makiwara, chishi, kata, basics, spar (when I can get a partner!). You know normal stuff. But due to the shifts I work and having to look after the kids when my better half is at work I just squeeze it in when I can. I workout extremely intensely. If I only have 1/2 hour, then that 1/2 hour will be like my last 1/2 hour I will ever get to train.

 

Sometimes I get a few spare hours, although not often enough! I will generally train in one area (kata, sparring, fitness, etc) and just do repetition after repetition.

I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"

Yeah, Warp, I'm geussing you've never played football or any kind of that nature, that stuff is possable. We are talking about High School Footbal Star can do that.

 

Rich- I run and bike when I can't get to the Dojo, and I lift 3 times a week. I do a full body program, made for wrestlers. I do JuJitsu, so I find wrestler's program works great. I can build you a w weight program if you able to get to the gym, What art do you pratice, and how many days a week can you get your hands on some weights?

I go to the gym twice a week (its a very good gym), I also do Trodai Karate, two 2 hour lessons a week. I have also just ordered a 5ft punch/kick bag. I'd like some exercises that I could do on the bag, although there probably aren't many!

Given the question the implication is that that was his schedule EVERY DAY.

 

run 2- 7 miles with 2 fifty pound sand bags: 7 miles would be half an hour assuming you can run the four minute mile for 7 miles in succession... with sandbags. This would likely take at least an hour, possibly more.

 

punching and kicking bag...beat on it until your hands and feet are pretty beat in: several hours

 

1500 sit ups: depending on fitness, but you would have to be INCREDIBLY buff to do this in under an hour. 1 situp per second would still take 25 minutes.. and I've yet to meet anyone who can sustain 1 situp per second for 25 minutes.

 

500 push ups: at least 15 minutes, as described under situps you would have to be ungodly fit to accomplish this in 15 minutes.

 

i would also have my partners in training beat me with 2x4s 100 times on all my muscles, arms. calves, upper arms, shoulders, chest, stomach, thighs, back and neck: depending on the number of friends, but at least 15 minutes assuming lots of them and also assuming that they have the stamina to beat you constantly very rapidly during that period. I imagine they would get tired after a couple dozen strikes with the 2x4 and wouldn't be able to strike as rapidly.

 

i would also swim year round and build a tolerance to the cold: could be any amount of time, probrably at least an hour.

 

Work kicks, strikes, katas and self defenses over and over: same as the swimming, this could be any amount of time.

 

i would spar and grapple a lot too this was the major emphasis on my training...which we spent hours on: as stated, took hours - by definition at least 2.

 

So in total that's 8.5 hours at the absolute minimum - assuming no travel time, no breaks, no eating, and of course assuming that you are more fit than any person has ever been recorded to be. That also assumes that you spent relatively little time on the sparring, practicing, swimming, etc. Realistically you're looking at about 18-20 hours of work. Maybe the days are longer where you live, but over here there's only slightly under 24 hours in a day.

Rich- What is your program like in the gym?

 

Warp- Again, I say, you should join High School Football. In season, that sounds about right. We run prob about 5-7 mile, then we run more with the drill and more on hills, dude, training till 7 at night, they train miles and miles more then Chen did! THe bag work, I've know Goldern Gloves Boxers to work on the bag for haurs at a time, and I'm sure the Pros train even longer! The sit-ups are done is 2 sets, making it easier to survive, and the push-up sitation he discribes isn't unlikely at all, you go to look at guy in the military, they have done 1000 of them at once. The rest of it is just as likely and possable.

 

You said 8.5 hour minimum, you are twisting your own facts. 8.5 hours Max! You took the largest amount on the first one, you put a 7 mile run, he said 2-7.

 

Now, lets look at the average High School Football Program for a Senior:

 

Get at school at 7 and train till second peroidat 9:45 so that is what, 2:45 hours of training

 

Get out around 1:30, lift for an hour

 

3:30 Time for Pratice, REAL football pratice, and we train till around 7, 9 if Coach is in a bad mood. that is 5:30 hours

 

That is around 9 hours a day of work. And we always make it to state, atleast the first round.

 

Just because you can't handle it doesn't mean other can't!

Keep in mind there are plenty of folks out there who use bodyweight exercises in what can only be described as insane numbers to get fit.

 

Football great Herschel Walker did 2000 situps and 1500 pushups a day.

 

Jhoon Rhee does 1000 pushups a day, and he is well into his 70s. A few years ago, he went on TV and did 100 in a minute.

 

Matt Furey is a beast and does similar.

 

Mr. Chen's workout sounds almost impossible to believe, although I know that there are plenty of people who do such a thing.. though the heavy bag and running thing sounds downright unhealthy.

 

I am currently working on trying to do 100 pushups in one go. I'm up in the 60's right now. I also run 4 times a week. 3-5 miles during the week, and then a long 8 mile run on Sunday. I keep within 6-7 minute miles. Sometimes, I toss out a 3 mile run day and hit the track for some interval work instead.

 

Cross-training, I work on the bike. I like to take the bike to work and back, although the weather hasn't agreed with that plan much lately. Ohio sucks for commuting via bicycle. :)

 

Class three nights a week. In the evenings after class, I like to take about 30 minutes to do some slow static stretches.

 

Other nights, I'll run a few miles to warm up and then spend an hour doing forms outside, bagwork indoors if it is cold, or playing with the nunchaku and sai.

 

I've been thinking about adding some weightliting just to balance out a few muscle groups that aren't as developed.
