UsagiYojimbo
Hi all, I just purchased a heavy bag for training, and have a couple questions. First off, what's the maximum number of days I should train a week? Also, should I use gloves and foot protection while I'm using it? Also, any other tips you can think of would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Usagi
Tibby
Don’t you gloves, but learn to properly wrap your wrists and ankles. Don’t wildly go at the bag, do combo’s. I’m in a rush, so I know this isn’t the most complete list. I’m sure the others will add more later. Good luck, and enjoy the bag! What kind is it, BTW? Water bag? Canvas cover? Century? Everlast? UsagiYojimbo
Thanks Tibby. It's an Everlast. How do I properly wrap my hands and feet? Usagi
Tibby
There are different ways. Just do a search online. Wrapping your wrist should be easy enough to fight, just look for a boxing site. Many of them will talk about gauze, pre-wrap, tape, cotton, etc, don’t worry about it, you just want stuff to support your wrist. You can go to a sporting goods store and get some boxing wrap for your hands, with loops to put around your thumb while you wrap, all kinds of fancy stuff. You want something good and firm, don’t waste your time with elastic ACE bandages, they don’t support you joints. Here is a site for wrapping your hands, I just found it: http://www.boxinggyms.com/tips/handwraps.htm Edited July 6, 2003 by Tibby
Thuggish
know your limits, but the maximim days for beatin on the heavy bag is seven. id say if you go at it for a while light bag gloves arent a bad idea, just know that you should always concentrate hitting with your first two knuckles and all that good stuff. kick it some, too. a broken arm throws no punches
StoneSkin
Hit that sucker as long as you can everyday for hours. Hit it untill you cant lift your arms then hit it some more. Do this for about 3 months then take a full week off. After that week off repeat the cycle youll develop good punching power. Some people say its over training but first you want to develop a foundation. Get the muscles memorised with the movements that way youll get faster and faster. After youve done the cycles for a year and have developed a good foundation. Hit the heavy bag for 10 rounds or so (approx 30-40mins) whenever you train.
