Neil Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 How can one determine natural weight class. Roy jones recently moved up from light heavyweight to heavyweight as one of many examples. Why are fighters concerened about thgere weight and keeping within their division when they could just move up to the next class. And why doesn't everyone just bulk up and get into the heavyweight division. I am starting boxing this Thursday and fight season starts in September so I want to bulk up to the heavyweight division (I'l be 16 then so I have no idea what the minimum weight is for an amateur under 18? thanks Neil
karate_woman Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 My guess would be it is better to be the heaviest person in a lower division than the lightest person in the next division up, assuming the competitors are all in great shape. As for why everyone isn't a heavyweight, not everyone is designed to be over 200lbs. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
Neil Posted June 17, 2003 Author Posted June 17, 2003 You only have to be over 190 pounds which isn't exactly very heavy is it?
karate_woman Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 It is for many people, depending on their build and stance on steroids. According to Sherdog, Royce Gracie's stats are 6'0, 176 lbs, for example. Anyway; just my opinion. I bet one of the mma or boxers will pop in and address this for you soon The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. -Lao-Tse
Tibby Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 There are several reasons why they don’t move up: For one thing, It is hard to gain weight for some people. After about 2-3 years of working out, gain become hard fought, and they have trouble putting on and/or keeping off the pounds. For another thing, the Heavy Weight class normally is full of guys who fight rather different then light weights. Light weights normally rely on speed, heavy normally on hard blows. The styles are just different. An other thing, (and I know this being so short) is that most of the Heavy Weights are tall guys, most of the lighter weights are shorter. The big guys have better reach, and harder hits. How much do you weight now?
Neil Posted June 17, 2003 Author Posted June 17, 2003 Well first of all I'm 15 years old so I am already pretty heavy especially for my height, as I get older I will of course get naturally heavier. At the moment I weight about 75 kilos, which is 165 pounds. I am 5'7. I will be very very short for a heavy weight, but I am training to fight in close. I need to 'crowd' the tall boxers just like Marciano who never lost a fight and only weighed 180 pounds. Could I ask what is the minimum weight for a heavyweight fighting under 18? thanks, Neil
Thuggish Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 im not sure about 'natura' weight class,' but i can say that gaining weight is hard for certain people, and gaining certain weights is impossible. de la hoya will never be 200lbs, for example. not only that, though- the weight gain sometimes makes one a worse boxer, if they have a really small frame it would likely slow them down quite a bit- making them slower than the others of that same weight. also, while gaining large amounts of muscle weight may be possible, keeping it is another trick all together. welter weights could probably build their bodies to be heavy weights, but it would likely disappear the second they stopped using all that extra muscle in the gym. a broken arm throws no punches
