Solo
I've been in Goju for about 6 years...I have my 3rdKyu Brown, next year my Sensei will be testing me for my Shodan...If I get it, it will have taken me 7 years..I guess it all depends on the style, teacher, student, anything and everything for that matter... TKDShoujo
I've been in the system a lil over 2 years and im a brown belt red stripe. I'll be testing for black belt in the spring, so I'd say it takes about 3 and half years to get to black in our system. Female- 16 years old - Brown Belt 3rd grade. Icetuete
yeah - but 3,5 years already is the lower end. 3 to 5 years is normal at most tkd schools. there is this style in the U.S. army somewhere... never remember the name, but i heard it takes 40 years to master. anyone knows about that? LordBucket
3.5 years on lower end for Tae Kwon Do? Most studios in my area claim that 2 years is about average. Icetuete
2 years for a black belt is very short. there either are many super-dojos around u, that make very good TKDists in very short time or the schools standard is very low, so they give away black belts to anyone OR i am mistaken, and 2 years is ok for a black belt. but where i'm from, its 3-5 years, depending of how many belt tests u do and how much training u attend during a week. LordBucket
That's funny. I always just thought it was the norm for Tae Kwon Do. Five years seems to be pretty much the standard around here for most other styles (although the local Shito-Ryu crowd, six years in the 'official' average time, even though the vast majority of Shito-Ryu black belts I know took it took more like ten.) I've asked some of the TKD instructors about it, and the explanation I'm generally given is that a black belt is considered to mean something a little different than is most other styles. They say they think of a black belt as meaning essentially 'ok...you've learned the basics, and we believe that you're serious now, so let's start taking martial arts seriously.' Aren't there two 'systems' of Tae Kwon Do in the US? I don't remember the acronyms, but there's the 'officiallly recognized Olympic Tae Kwon Do' and 'the other one.' ATA? Might this be part of what's going on?
