Slim Posted September 18, 2001 Posted September 18, 2001 Ive just got over a 3 day flu, everything is nornal now except for the pain in my knees. I started skipping and running a few weeks ago, and along with Muay Thai Im afraid Ive done some damage. I always stretch and try to be aware of pushing myself to hard. All I can think of is to have a week off, just sticking to upper body work, and see if they come right. Has anyone else heard of something like this?
babysteffee Posted September 18, 2001 Posted September 18, 2001 Yeah. The aches in your knees are because you've put too much strain on them...more than likely from the running. For all your lungs and heart etc can cope with running long distances without preparing, your joints can't. Stretching is still ok to carry on with, and might even help, but I'd lay off the running and skipping for a week like you say. Be prepared to lose a little of your stamina though.
KickChick Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Most likely what has happened to you is that since you curtailed activity while you were sick your muscles had a chance to "rest up" a bit...you need to gradually stretch those resting muscles and ligaments. You just over exerted I think. Stretch the hamstrings and quadriceps in early morning and at night before you retire.... Here is a site that contains some real good strengthening & stretching exercises for your knees: http://www.teamresultz.com/knee3.html Deby
Jack Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Slim, I have similar knee pains, however I have had them for the last 4 months... they're growing pains for me and they hurt at knees and ankles where the bones still grow. I have to really watch my exercise, infact I have simply reached the stage where I do not run, it hurts too much. I have to find other ways of leg exercises such as biking... and I would do rowing machine but my gym won't let someone of my age in JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
Slim Posted September 19, 2001 Author Posted September 19, 2001 Thanks for replies, I guess what Im most afraid of is becoming like Jack, sorry to say it dude, but that sounds serious. I read that because of poor blood supply, cartilage cannot repair itself as well as muscle, skin and bone. I want to train hard, the last thing I need is a permanant injury. A lot of pressure must be on the knees while kicking, I wonder how common this is in martial arts?
Iron Arahat Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Where specifically is your knee pain Slim? I have had numerous serious injuries to my kness mostly from when I played football. Something about getting helmets in the knee, that doesn't go over too well.. Martial Arts School http://www.shaolinwushu.cahttp://www.liveyyc.comCalgary Photographer: http://www.jdirom.com
Slim Posted September 20, 2001 Author Posted September 20, 2001 Well....its kinda in my knees..behind my kneecaps.. thats not much help, sorry! Theres no swelling or bruising or anything, after these few days of treating them like newborns pain seems to be receeding somewhat, it seems to be worse in the middle of the night so Ill know more in the morning. Do you think I should be using some kind of wrap support in the future?
iamrushman Posted September 20, 2001 Posted September 20, 2001 SLIM...what's your age?.....a knee support wouldn't be a bad idea...also this could be related to post flu symptoms.......have you mentioned this to your doctor yet?........... rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
Jack Posted September 20, 2001 Posted September 20, 2001 Sorry I made it sound worse than it really is in my earlier post... I can actually run sometimes I just have to play it by ear, some days its bad others its not. It's just growing pains, they will get better sometime this year I should think JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
