For me.. it was actually the opposite... My diet/weightloss inspired me to start with martial arts, not the other way around. :)

I started about 2.5 years ago on a low fat diet, while working exercise into the mix. I lost 80lbs on this program and then hit a major (6 month)plateau.

Over a year ago, I started hitting the gym (and increased cardio) quite frequently... Last September I started the Atkins diet (low carb, high fat/protein) and have lost 45lbs since (125lbs total). I am just about at my goal weight (plus extra skin). I'm 5'10, 215lbs with a 36" waist now.

I am continuing with my regular exercise schedule (2 days a week on weights, 4-5 days a week on cardio) as well as 3 hours a week at Kempo and 2 hours a week at Jujitsu, now. I felt I needed something physical with goals I could aspire to reach with my new found body. :karate:

I don't really have a special diet because of martial arts, though my body doesn't tend to like terribly greasy foods (I get terrible pains in my stomach, and, er...the food doesn't stay around long), so I avoid them if I can. I also don't eat a lot of sweets since I have hypoglycemic tendencies. Those tendencies also mean I have to eat regularly. I don't generally eat if I'm not hungry, either.

The only fish I'll eat is Tuna, and seafood made me so terribly ill when I was 12 I avoid all forms of it; it doesn't appeal to me anyway. I'm not a big snacker (nuts, chips, chocolates, ice cream, etc).

Basically, along with being a vegan I don't eat sugar, fried foods, processed foods or anything with white flour, potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, any spices, rock salt, or any artificial flavors, preservatives or colorings. That's pretty much it.

Fellow Vegan!!!!!! :D

Vegan's eat a lot of whole grains, veggies, beans, fruits, plant based oils, and nuts. Chemicals and animal products are evil and you will die a slow and painful death..... !!!!!!

I was just surprised about the potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, any spices, in addition to being vegan; the chemicals/artificial flavours didn't surprise me, but by spices do you mean ALL spices, or just those that you buy in stores (you can grow your own basic, oregano, etc, so why not include them, provided you either grow them yourself or they are organically grown and processed?)

Can't speak for JKTT of course but tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant (and onions too) belong to the Nightshade family and contain phytochemicals that can be damaging and bad for some people. Certain spices also contain natural substances which can be "bad". I don't know about spinach.

Ninjanurse nailed it exactly about nightshades and vegans!

For drinks, I drink only water and soymilk. I'm trying to find some wheatgrass juice, but no such luck yet. I'd say about 60% of my diet consists of dried or fresh fruits and lots of vegetables. I forgot to write above that I don't eat any tropical fruits (Too much of certain acids can be upsetting), but all other fruits are great. I eat all vegetables except the ones that I listed above. For the rest of my diet, I eat seeds, nuts, bread, dry cereals, pasta and noodles. The only condiments I use are soy sauce on my noodles and pasta, and honey with my bread.

JKTT,

You can find wheatgrass juice in the frozen case at some organic/whole food stores. It's a bit pricey though. You can buy a juicer designed for wheatgrass too. I love being a vegan-I feel so good all the time :) . Yesterday in my new school the master instructor commented to the class that eating red meat and procesed foods decreases flexibility-hint, hint :brow: !!!

Finally, someone on the "outside" sees the value of being a vegan :D !

For those of you that think this is a sick diet, you should do some research and try it out. You'll feel so good all the time that you won't even miss those hamburgers and greasy fries. You'll be surprised how deliscious living foods are...and the animals will thank you too  !!!
