Effects of different types of impact training on joints.

Hello, Got to thinking last night whilst pounding the makiwara, has anyone seen any studies describing differences (if any) in the effects on the joints,and joint tissues, that result from striking relatively rigid targets, like a makiwara, vs. a relatively soft target, like a heavy bag?

 

I asked a friend of mine from the Kinesiology Dept. who is working on soft tissue destruction in running, and he knew of no studies. My interest in this is partially personal, since I use both forms of training daily, but also in order to more efectively teach.

Those are very good questions. And they did not start coming up until more of us westerners became involved in the arts. I have seen a study on the incidence of injuries in various sports but nothing like what you are looking for.

i don't know anything about the contact on soft or hard things, but if you don't turn your bottom foot while doing a side kick or a roundhouse then you have a good chance in hurting your knee and possible pulling your ACL.
