When you have a baby, there is something called relaxin that loosens your ligaments, and I've read it is dangerous to do certain things too soon after pregnancy (tennis is one, I believe).

I had a baby December 28, and returned to karate (I'm a shodan) on February 28. I feel fine, though I managed to injure my ankle a couple weeks later (it is ok again now, though - it felt stiff for a week or two). I've been trying to take it relatively easy, not doing any spinning jumping techniques, hitting the heavy bag, etc. My question is: how long should I be babying myself, and is there anything I shouldn't be doing?

In my experience (after 4 kids-all by c-section) you should let your body be the guide. I returned to training 6 weeks after and never had any problems. You may have just coincidentaly injured your ankle.

It takes some time to get your "groove" back. I think listening to all the signals your body is sending you is the best tactic. Don't push yourself and with moderation everything would get back to normal. Overpushing could get you into trouble and then you'll have to recover from childbirth and the problems you caused yourself by trying too hard. It's better to have only one thing to recover from :)

And I also think it's maybe a coincidence you've damaged your ankle. Take care. You're a mommy now. Co :karate: ngrats
