Sparring - What do you wear?

Mr. Hall

Do you prefer to spar with the cloth shin and instep or the foam boot?

Hehe...I just realized that I never listed all the equipment I used to wear...("used to" because I don't train in a dojo anymore, and don't get to spar)

Here goes:

Shin pads

Sparring boots

Chest protector

Gloves

Mouthguard

Helmet w/facecage

I felt like the Stay-Puf marshmallow man. Honestly. I don't know how I ever won any tournament matches.

Either we wear nothing for light contact.

Can I come watch one of your classes?

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

In our Dojo, the Sensei didn't make us wear chest protectors at first, but now he does. Also, head gear, no cage tg!, mouth guard, mitts and foam feet. Shin pads are optional. He's not particular of the style of protection, so long as it does it's job.

The helmet sucks big time because you can't really hear too well, and when the Sempais say YAME!, and you keep going, well, lets just say a lot of red faces and downward looks are the norm!

The chest protectors were brought in because the younger kids didn't have the necessary control and were holding back from completing the technique. I find it a detriment as I feel I must hit the protection to know if I scored. We are not allowed any head contact and just light chest contact, even though we're protected to the hilt!

OH ya, guys are to wear a cup, girls don't have to.

In class, nothing and light/medium contact. I do recommend the cloth shin protectors and cups. At testings, WTF-authorized headgear, sometimes (hogu-body armor). At tournaments, full gear: headgear, armor, cup, shin/forearm pads, mouthguard.

My opinion-Welcome to it.

  • 4 weeks later...

when I do light/moderate contact sparring I wear:

Foam Booths, Shin guards, groin protector, boxing gloves and mouth guard. If I'm doing just drills everything I mentioned except mouth guard.
