BKJ1216 Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 I dont' know if I'm actualy hurting myself when I'm conditioning or if I'm helping. So is it realy that important to condition myself before I start karate. Because not only do I not know if it's good or bad, it's starting to interfere with daily activities because I'm too sore to do them. White Belt- Shudokan Karate
WolverineGuy Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 Conditioning can only help. The soreness will stop after a while, so don't sweat that, just make sure you're not pushing yourself TOO hard. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."

monkeygirl Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 Don't forget to give yourself some healing time. Pushing yourself TOO HARD can cause ripping of muscles, overly tender joints, etc. Listen to your body. If you're doing 20 pushups and start to feel pain, don't go on and do 20 more. 5 more maybe just to push yourself, but don't go overboard with it. That's a quick way to give yourself shoulder problems. I don't know if that's what you're doing or not, but you should know. Also, too much soreness kind of defeats the purpose! Once you start training in martial arts, if your arms, legs and stomach are very sore, it's going to make MA training pretty difficult and uncomfortable. Keep that in mind. 1st dan & Asst. Withers M.A.A. Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 Depends on what you are doing. Are you conditioning yourself in ways you don't know what you're doing or were you taught what you should be doing? 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. 1997 NASKA competitor-2nd place Nationally in Blackbelt American Forms. G95champ Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 What are you conditioning? There is a differance in running a mile, lifting some weights and doing a few set up As opposed to hitting a steel bar, kicking a tree, or dropping rocks on you stomach. Running, Lifting, Stretching, and that type of conditioning never hurt anyone if done right. Being sore is part of the game. However it should pass in a few weeks. Kicking trees, punching steel, and other crazy junk is just that. I know its what you see in movies and stuff but lets be honest you not going to be faced with a situation that calls for you to rip a guys heart out or kick through baseball bat. Talk to your Sensei, A Coach at your HS, a friend who works out, go to a web site get some info. Knowing what to do and when to do it is more important than doing everyting all the time. Like MonkeyGirl said you need to allow for rest as well. BTW punching holes in your wall is not conditiong. LOL..... (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
