spongebob Posted April 5, 2003 Posted April 5, 2003 I was wondering if anybody here has tried this supplement and if it has worked for them? It is supposed to help joint pain and ligament damage. Maybe kickchick would know. I have pain in my knees when doing a horse stance. I'm not sure if the pain is from lifting the weight of my body, or if I have overextended my knees when doing kicks. Lately I have been trying to get lower and lower into a horse stance, and now there's even more pain. I have pain in the elbow which I know came from an over extended punch, so I know I have to work on better technique. The use of an elactic tension wrap helps a little bit and a long hot bath in epsom salts helps very sore muscles. So has anyone experienced sore knees like this, and has anyone had any luck with creams or supplements? Thanks Live, Love, Laugh
Withers M.A.A. Posted April 5, 2003 Posted April 5, 2003 One of my old lifting partners had an injured shoulder which prevented him from doing many exercises. He used the Glucosamine supplement and said it worked for him. I personally never tried it but when he was taking it I did notice he was able to do more when we worked out. It may have been psychological but it did seem to work. 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. 1997 NASKA competitor-2nd place Nationally in Blackbelt American Forms. Tombstone Posted April 5, 2003 Posted April 5, 2003 I take glucose an hour before my workouts. It helps keep your muscles from getting sore.
hobz Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 All I can say, is scientifically it DOES work. I read an whole article in a magazine about it... I could scan it if you'd like me too ? Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences.
nathanjusko Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 Glucosamine helps a lot, in my opinion. Over the summer I became a running freak and was running like 5 miles every day to train for my black belt test. My knees started to really hurt and I took a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement with MSM and calcium and about a week later the pain in my knees was gone and I was up and running again.
SaiFightsMS Posted April 6, 2003 Posted April 6, 2003 When you hit the point of pain in your horse stance stop. Do not go any deeper or you can damage your knees. You should also learn exercises to strengthen the area around your knees. Ie leg extension.
spongebob Posted April 7, 2003 Author Posted April 7, 2003 Thank you everyone. I am going to try it, and I'll report back in a week or two and let you know if I think it has made a difference. Not sure which product tho. There's glucosamine cream which is very expensive, about $25 for a tiny jar, and glucosamine and chondroitin together, and sold seperately. Placebo or not, anything to alieve a little joint/muscle pain would be good. Hobz I am interested in seeing some scientific facts. I saw an ad in a popular martial arts magazine, but then again, I've seen breast enlargements ads in the same mag. lololol (like that will help your karate)lolol Thanks for your opinions. spongebob Posted April 7, 2003 Author Posted April 7, 2003 Just did a google search, and there does seem to be alot of scientific research and proof for both those supplements. Live, Love, Laugh
The_Ryno Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 Sponge, your best bet is Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Collagen. Glucosamine will help build connective tissue, Chondtroitin blocks the enzymes that break down connective tissue over time, and collagen will give you something to build connective tisue from. Try joint support from Nature's Best, or JSF from champion nutrition. There are also a few liquid GCC supplements available, but they taste foul. Bear in mind, It normally takes 3-4 weeks for your body to respond to the suplement. "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
Bretty101 Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 I've been taking GLucosamine for the last 3 months and have noticed a significant improvement in my joints. Glucosamine is the amino acid needed for your body to rebuild cartilage. Cartilage protects the bones where they rub together in your joints. My worst problem was with my knees (thanks to TKD). Things like sitting/horse stance are really not good for your knees. it's best to keep your feet in line with your legs. Okay the stance is meant to be done with parrallel feet but that is so bad for your knees!! The best thing i have found for my joints (shoulder and knees) is weight training. The extra muscle supports and aligns all my joints and feels great! Hope your knees get better! Bretty
