Unfortunatly most schools hand out blackbelts like candy. Most blackbelts nowadays are given after about two years and in some cases six months. My dojo it takes about six years depending on how often someone trains and ofcourse there ability.

Yes, i think that depends on the school.

Sometimes in one school can take you 2-3 years while other takes 7-8 or even 10 years to get a black belt. Many times depend also in how quick your learn and perform good techniques too.

The average can maybe be 4 to 6 years or a little more. I think that's a good amount of time to really be good at the basics of any style.

Less than 2 years. its a Mcdojo.

The Engish Karate Governing Body's time is 33 months, and so is British NAtional Martial Arts Associations's.

I suppose it depends on your style as to what is expected.

Well it took me 5 years to become "black belt" in Kali, Jun Fan, Muay Thai and Silat. But these systems don't traditionally have belts. Well, at least we didn't. In Brazillian Jujitsu it takes about 10 years to get black-belt, I think. I really don't care about being a "black belt", I just love the training.

The USTU suggests 33 months to get a black belt. This amount of time is only supposed to be valid if you are very dedicated in your training and usually takes longer. The average at our school is about 3 1/2 to 4 years.

In many martial arts, the black belt is just another belt. Its only recently become special.

But I dont really know what to think about this topic. There ar plently of people ready for black belt after 3 years of training, whilst some others just dont have the abliity.

To me, black belt is just the start of someones martial arts life. Remember - Karate-Do - the way of karate

It takes about 6-8 years in my kickboxing class to get to black belt.

I want to do Jiu Jitsu too because it takes so long to master, so it should be more of a challenge (in theory anyway).

Some people spend 3/4 times a week training, whilst others only train once a week, with less effort etc...I don't really think a school should be judged on the time it takes to make black belt alone.
