KarateKid7
Hey... I have been doing this training program for quite a while in the hope that it would improve my physique but it doesn't have seem to have done that...it has improved my strength drastically but my arms remain really stick-like and i have and overall lanky physique... is that to do with like my genetics or is it because am not lifting enough weights....i am under 16 however so it could be to do with the level of hormone in my blood but i am not sure....the rest of the people my age in my dojo seem to have an amazing physique but they don't even work out !!! could some1 help me plz? crash
genetics does play an important role in how big you can become but anyone can have a good build, are you now or have you ever been active in any other sports? have you been working out very long? if the answer to these questions is no, then it could take a little longer for your body to adapt and notice any drastic changes. As far as lifting enough weight, how much do you lift? to start with you should try to do 3 sets of 10, and on the 8th to 10th rep you should be to failure (in other words you should have to really push to get that 8th to 10th rep out)(without going to failure muscle will not grow)also, what is your diet? you have to eat right for muscle growth, without enough protien, growth will be minimul. look at your workout plan and make sure you're hitting all the major muscle groups (the body has a way of trying to keep itself symetrical,if you hit all the major groups you'll notice faster gains than if you are only working 1 or 2 areas.) and watch your diet, make sure your getting enough of the proper foods. jmy77
That depends on a lot of things... What does your program look like? Keep this in mind - biceps are more for show than go! (What my old wrestling coach called "beach muscles") If you are worried about your arms: For biceps try preacher curls, concentration curls and when using dumbells remember to turn you wrist as you curl up. (ie. at rest your palm should be facing your hip/side when full curled your palm should be facing your shoulder.) For Triceps - Push ups and dips are good. There are a lot of weight exercise you can do also, I always liked push downs and rope pull downs. "Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft." - Pres. jmy77
Also how much do you eat and are you getting enough rest? If you are under 16 you are probably right around when the time you are going to get your growth spurt. You should be eating just about everything you can get your hands on! Expect of course for junk food and fast food - that does nothing for you! I worked out all through highschool and never broke 150lbs., I could was strong - benching 250 but my body just wasn't mature... after my first year in college i put on 25lbs. because my muscles were maturing. So give it time. I am 26 now and weigh 200lbs. but i think that has more to do with being a desk jockey than anything else. What I am getting at is give it time, don't get discouraged, also, don't compare yourself to other people - the factors are different for everyone. ZR440
You are under 16? Your main goal should be exercising your brain. Pick up your books and study. ZR440
Doesn't matter. Having a good physique isn't going to pay the bills later in life. Either will martial arts. You need to absorb everything you can in school. There are very few second chances and life in general doesn't care what route you choose. Trust me. It's happy hour somewhere in the world. KarateKid7
hey i just wanted to say thx for all ur replies.... my training program probably has to b modified so that it leads to failure...thx for the advice abt the 8th rep being the 'failure rep' i think ur rite in a way by saying i need to train my mind because that is important too....ma workout is like this on every monday\wednesday and friday and i use weekends for rest: i use 5 kg weights and first i do: 3x25 pressups 3x20 situps 5x3 pullups then... 3x20 bicep curls 1x100 wrist extensors on both arms i do 3x3 of the exercise where u pull the weight behind ur head and back again which exercises the triceps..... also 2x20 shoulder presses and alternate pressess i don't have a lot of equipment and i am really poor but i am trying to make the most of wat i have... i don't particularly want an amazing phyisique coz i am only just 16 but i want to put on some meat so i can develop a certain amount of power and decent posture with a strong stance...thats all..... i do eat loads of protein...i make sure i always have a side helping with all my meals with a good source of protein with like baked beans or soya beans or something.... i was wondering whether wheneva i exercise that all my muscles that i exercise have to b completely worn out where i can hardly hold a pencil? jmy77
Okay - First this is just my opinion - you do not need to work out until you can not hold a pencil, though you should be tight when done. If you want a nice physique you need to concentrate on one area more and leave the little things (wrist extenstions) out.... When I lifted weights a routine I used a lot was this: Monday: Bench Press 3/4 sets, Flat Dumbell Press 3 sets and flyes 3 sets, then biceps: bar curls 3 sets, dumbell curls 3 sets Tues: bent over row 3 sets, dead lift 3 sets, then shoulders: militrary press 3 sets, front raise 2 sets, lateral raise 2 sets Wed: squats 5 sets, lunges 2 sets and triceps push down (bar) 4 sets, pull down (rope) 2 sets, Thurs repeat monday Fri repest tues. Weekend off. If you don't have a lot of $$ and are really interested in exercising do a search for bodyweight calisthenics - that's what i do now and i feel much better then i did whe i was hittin' the weights! There is a Navy SEAL program on the web that is all body weight exercises. do a search and try to find it, if you can't pm me and i'll help you.
