Kind of embarrasing question...

I am very active in martial arts but unfortuanetaly, I have yet to join any class. You see, I have something that is very embarissing for me, ingrown toenails. FYI this means that my toenail stabs the side of my toe when pressure is applied. Now I can stand the pain mostly, as I am active like I said before, but would this impede my MA training in a school? I could find a dojo allowing "karate slippers" but do you think that this would stop me from doing anything? This is just temporary till I get surgery sometime within a year. :) :) :)

Many martial artists have problems. Some are blind, some are in wheelchairs, and well you have ingrown nails. Just have to find a way to overcome your problem and succeed at what you would like to do. I am sure if you talk to the instructor about your problem he would have no problem letting you wear kung-fu or wrestling shoes till you have your surgery. But thats just one way to go. If the pain gets worse, try meditating it may help the pain :)

I am glad I am getting the treatment... (500-700$ dollars ouch) Sometimes you know, the pain is horrible. I am a big guy, and can do stuff like trip and smack my head on an asphalt road and only flinch, but the pain from hitting it the wrong way can have me doubled over screaming, and I think that may be a...slight cut back. I think in the end I will most likely end up waiting till after surgery... :(

Try meditating friend. Let your mind clear and watch the pain flow from your toes out and feel the pain dissolve :) It might not happen, or might take awhile depending on how long you have been meditating. But something better then none, aye?

I already meditate, quite often in fact. I incorporate a few buddhist teachings into my life. I think you are doubting the pain here, mate...its like being stabbed in the foot with a steak knife. Thanks for the advice though, I will try it.

I don't know that ingrown toenails is embarassing as much as they are painful. I had one and almost never got it better cause people kept stepping on it in class.

How the heck does a person in wheel chair do martial arts?

 

If you mean run the person over with his wheel chair then you don't need martial arts for that.

 

I guess if a person in a wheel chair does something like Tai chi,then it makes sense,but something to do with self-defense,I doubt it.

MTfighter, sometimes I find your posts disgusting. No a disabled person is never doing to be as good as Renzo Gracie, Yoshida or O Sensei Ueshiba. But most dont want to be and they should be aloud to practice the art.

Trolls, cant leave with 'um, however I could live without them.....

 

As for Karate Slippers, I dont think they will help. You should find a style that has minimal contact for the first few years. Only to give time for your feet to fully heal. I would suggest one of the Wudang Kung Fu, Tai Chi, HsingI or Ba Gua.

I made the remark about the disabled person doing martial arts,but I'm not the one looking for karate slippers.Can't fight muay thai with karate slippers.

 

I know a disabled person can do martial arts, if that wasn't possible I wouldn't be able to do martial arts,but I'm still able to walk,I'm not in a wheel chair.I don't understand how a person who can't walk can do martial arts.

 

I never said they shouldn't be allowed to,I just don't know how they'd manage to,unless like I said it was tai chi.

 

I wasn't trying to be mean,I 'm just curious to how they do it if they can't even walk.

 

Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to be disgusting and cruel,I never meant for it to come across that way.

 

I have alot of respect for people who don't let their disability get in the way of what they want to do and do their best to get where they want instead of giving up.
