karate_woman
) That is funny. I haven't had someone actually strike me as a "test", but sometimes they like to pretend to hit me and say stuff like "oh, could have had you there, you didn't block". I invariably respond with "I didn't perceive a threat, and it looks like I was right". hobbitbob
Well, I enjoy karate a lot. If someone asks me what I like to do for fun in an ordinary conversation it often comes up - it is hard not to talk about something that has taken up most of your spare time for so long! Another reason it comes up is the bruises I end up with on my arms and shins. I refuse to go around wearing long sleeved shirts and hiding myself, since I don't think they are anything to be ashamed of (hey! I worked hard for those bruises! ), so I sometimes get questioned on them. This is soooo amusing! One of our Brown belts who is a rather petite, pixielike young lady (who would probably throw one of her patented "ribcruncher" yoko kekomi at me if she saw me refer to her as "pixielike") was at Sears earlier this year looking at dishwashers, adn since it was a warm January day, was wearing short sleeves. We had done kotekite (conditioning) the night before, so her arms were a nice shade of purple! Apparently the salesman was verrry solicitous, and offered that his girlfriend worked at a domestic crisis hotline, etc... I'm sure the fact that she has just hit her fourth month of Pregnancy a tthe time, and was beginning to show aided in the man's assumption that she was a damsel in distress! She told us that it took a great deal of effort (including an impormptu demonstration of Bassai and Gojushiho) to convince him that her husband wasn't beating her up. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
Treebranch
A friend of mine at work were talking about MA and I told him I'm studying Budo Taijutsu. He studied Kajukenbo and Karate, he's a BB. He didn't know what it was, he said he never heard of it. So I basically told him what it is. He said it's sounds like old stuff that probably doesn't really work. So I said it works believe me. He asked me if I knew what a sleeper hold is and I said yes. Have you every had one put on you, it's really hard to get out of, if you even can. So here I'm thinking we are going to play around a bit and learn some techniques from eachother. I tell him to go ahead and put one on me. I didn't think in a million years he was going to crank that thing on me full blast. So I got a little panicy for a second and I did the technique and it worked beautifully. It was the first time I had done it with such a powerful person. After that he was really impressed, he said that he would have never thought to do what I had did. So sometimes it's good to test your techniques on these people, they should work on anyone or they probably don't work at all. Fenris-wolf
Hiya all. God, it's weird, I've never actually had anyone challenge me, and since I love MA it quite frequently comes up in casual conversation. Everyone I know knows I do Muay Thai -if they let me it's all I'll talk about! Maybe NZ's a bit more relaxed about these kind of things. Although once when I was late I biked to Karate in my gi and I got some amused/confused/intimidated looks. And I was only 14! Let Us Turn The Jump Rope In Accord With Socialist Principles!
