How many people recomend doing a little weight lifting to increase strength. I ask because I'm starting highschool next year and they have weight lifting as part of the phsycial education class, I figured it coudlnt' hurt. But am I right in that assumption?

A little weight lifting can be good. Start out slow, and try to get a gym teacher/trainer or knowledgeable person to help you set a schedule for yourself, in addition to the suggestions made here.

You'll probably want a good mixture of upper body and lower body workouts. Working out can be very fun and beneficial. I wish I had the time/money/transportation to do it.

A caution about weight lifting and martial arts...

May sure that you have a good stretching program and do it consistantly or you will find that you will lose flexibility as you gain strength and muscle.

nah, ... actually I call that an old martial arts wives tale!

The concerns of "bulking up" and of loosing flexibility and speed are quickly disappearing.

In reality, only genetically predisposed people,( both male and female,) possess the physiology to get pro body builder proportions.

But in all actuality what they will achieve.... is increased strength and endurance, as well as increased speed and flexibility.

Perfect opportunity for you BKJ to "learn" how to lift and to use correct forum which is the key in weight training safety! You'll achieve some self confidence and also the added benefit of target some of that body fat many young teenage boys have at your age.

Alright cool. I'm not really trying to be one of those body builders who look like there dad din't hug them enough as a kid. I just want a little more endurance strength, and a little more muscle mass woudln't hurt. Yeah so anyway it's free too at school, so I'm gonna do it.
