What type of traning should I do while I'm still in kyu rank, and away from the dojo.

Also which you recomend. Makiwara boards, or a nice heavy bag.

I'me leaning towards makiwara because I have no were to hang a bag, and i haven't seen any good free standing ones. I've also heard that training with a makiwara board is dangerous becaue you may think your getting better when you are actually gettting worse.

A lot depends on how old you are. Forms are good for solo training as well as doing repititive drills like the ones you do in class; back and forth blocks, punches, strikes, kicks.

Personally I have a wavemaster.

Cardio!

There are always two choices, two paths. One choice is easy and its only reward is it's easy.

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

Like BonnyBoy said, Cardio!

Do lots of running, jumping rope, sprinting, etc. when you train outside of class. Gaining endurance now will make training and testing much easier later on.

While you're in class, do everything to the fullest. If your school emphasizes low stances, go as low as you can. Hit bags as hard and fast as you can. Do the best that you can, in the way you're supposed to ;) Basically, treat every night like it's testing night, and you have to be perfect and sharp. Endurance is one of the most important things you can have as a martial artist. That hard work will really pay off during long bouts of fighting.

jump rope is great for endurence, but if your goin for heavy bag for endurence then just go full out attacking it for half an hour.
