The importance of sparring

Recommended Posts

How important is sparring in comparison to working on your moves.

What is the most essential and has the most benefit to your training.

Also, how often should you spar per week?

I usually spar once a week.

Hi,

As you no doubt know, most people who start martial arts (for one reason or another), don't exactly know what to expect when they throw that first punch or kick.

Like most of you, I think that sparring prepares the martial artist both physically and mentally for the real world outside the dojo, by enabling each individual to practise against one another in a controlled environment :karate:

Sparring is very important, but only if done correctly. It's not about speed or "who can tag who first". It's about learning and trying to put into application the things you've learned. Too many places don't spar in a productive way and it is actually detrimental at these places. So, for most schools I guess sparring should be left out.

Pros for sparring.

*You get to see what works and what doesn't

*This is the closest thing that you will get to a fight.

Cons of sparring.

*Tag game. A simple tag in the street will cost you dearly.

*Strikes are done above the belt. In a street fight kicks are done below the belt because they are far quicker.

*There are rules, but in street fight everything goes and this may lead martial artist to bad habits.

*In conclusion, sparring has become too much of a sport and away from the real thing.
