The_Devil_In_Disguise Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 Hi. On saturday, I bruised my heel doing backflips for Kung-fu which is bad enough. The next day, I was doing power cartwheels when I landed on the ball of my foot. I felt my leg bone kinda slide over my ankle (kind of like the bone painfully clicking) and my ankle has swollen up to nearly the size of a tennis ball. Could this be a sprain??? (Never having had one, I'm not sure what one is) fool me once... shame on youfool me twice... I'll cut your *
ZeRo Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 use the RICE methos here. Rest Ice Compress Elevate. these should stop the swelling and heal it faster.
The_Devil_In_Disguise Posted February 25, 2003 Author Posted February 25, 2003 what do you mean by compress??? Just keep some pressure on it? fool me once... shame on youfool me twice... I'll cut your *
KickChick Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 I would recommend you have it checked and x-rayed... ankle injuries are tricky -- what looks like a sprain may possible be a fracture. In the meantime.... As Zero posted, ice your ankle until the swelling disappears. The ice limits the bleeding by narrowing blood vessels and helps reduce swelling. Fill a plastic bag with crushed ice and strap it onto the ankle with a towel or elastic bandage. Or you can use a bag of frozen peas or a cooler ice pack. Doctors usually recommend icing the ankle for 24 hours and then using heat and then there are others that prefer ice therapy only. Continue icing your ankle for 20 minutes or until it starts to feel numb, and then take off the ice pack and give the ankle enough time to regain some warmth, usually about 20 minutes. Keep icing for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for 48 hours or until the ankle returns to normal size. By "compressing" the ankle ... means to wrap it with an elastic bandage, which limits the swelling and bruising. You can do this in between icings and at night when you sleep. Also it is important to elevate the ankle so that it rests above your hips and above your heart. When you sleep try and keep it on pillows or raise the foot of your bed.
