Valn Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 Do you believe that having 26 kata in shotokan is too much? At the moment I know Heian 1-5, Tekki 1-3, and Hangetsu. Tekki 2 and 3 aren't necessarily important if you consider the similarity with the first Tekki. In fact, all the Tekki will improve your strength in your legs, so I don't really see the point of doing two other kata which are really working on the same thing.
Karateka Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 26! That's it. In Shi-to Ryu their are about 50. Trust me, every single one is important. If you study where the kata comes from, then it is important. "Never hit a man while he's down; kick him, its easier"Sensei Ron Bagley (My Sensei)
Valn Posted August 25, 2001 Author Posted August 25, 2001 50 kata! That's crazy! I don't see how you can remember and perform each kata to perfection. If you really have 50 kata, I wonder how often you learn a new one.
BlueDragon Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 50....uh.....wow Man, and I thought the 14 in kyokushin were bad. "Excuse me while I kiss the sky" -Hendrix

BlueDragon Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 Sorry I haven't been able to find one "Excuse me while I kiss the sky" -Hendrix
Valn Posted August 26, 2001 Author Posted August 26, 2001 If you know all 26 shotokan kata, what are the most beneficial in terms of improving your skills, muscles, speed and so on?
username237 Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 26 katas isn't much at all! I felt so good once i had learned them all, it gives you such a range of combos and variations to practice! How can you complain!!!!!!!
SaiFightsMS Posted November 27, 2001 Posted November 27, 2001 :???:Shouldn't learning each new kata be a new and unique challange? The old masters thought some of the katas required a lifetime to truely master. If we are honest with ourselves we should allways have room to learn and improve.
