BlueDragon1981
Each system varies. Tae Kwon Do has their own. Aikido has there own. Also each teacher can vary the belts. So it is not a set in stone thing. Normally White is first and black is beginning of "expert level" all in between can have differences depending on the system. Some systems have sashes not belts. Here is our systems rankings. Lowest to highest. Kyus White White 1 stripe White 2 Stripes Green Purple Brown 3 Stripes Brown 2 Stripes Brown 1 or no stripes Black After black the belt colors vary. At i think 4th degree black the belt isn't even black. But they are still considered a 4th degree "Black Belt" So eache system varies and it depends on the style and who teaches it. DokterVet
Like BlueDragon1981 said, it is different everywhere you go. There is no universal system. In my organization, Toronto Wado-Kai, we have the following: white(and up to four stripes for children, adults go straight to yellow) yellow orange green blue brown shodan-ho (This is brown with a black stripe. You compete and train as a black belt, but don't have the full honour yet. This is my rank after 7 years of karate) Black As the black belts gain age and experience, their belts become worn so that white shows through. The whiter a black belt's belt is means he's had it longer. 22 years oldShootwrestlingFormerly Wado-Kai Karate

CheekyMusician
Whoa how long does it take to get to 1st dan? That varies too from person to person, club to club and style to style, but in my club I reckon that it'd take at least 4 years to reach first dan, but probably closer to 5. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
