Kyokushin
I really don't know what Hai is, but Osu is used in a lot of ways. It can be used to say hello, I understand, I will do it, etc. Literally translated it means to perservere even when things are tough. So sometimes when performing various techniques you might say Osu to remind yourself of your commitment to always do your best. Hope that helps I had an embarrassing bowing moment one time during a Cross Country season. It had been a really tough run and we were just finishing up stretching. When I went to go inside the building and get my things I opened the door by backing into it b/c I was too tired to push it open any other way. I usually open the dojo door this way when I'm leaving so that I can say bye after I bow out. So I guess since I was so tired it reminded me of karate and I ended up bowing in the door w/ an Osu! Luckily it wasn't very loud and nobody seemed to notice. Needless to say I turned bright red and jetted outta there!!! Fenris-wolf
Nothing particularly exciting here -but quite often when we're having a break at training and we're talking I finish the conversation by bowing. Actually, what's quite funny is that sometimes after I've been doing bag-work I'll bow to the bag. Let Us Turn The Jump Rope In Accord With Socialist Principles! Valithor
Hi all, I can't begin to count all the times I've bowed or responded outside the dojo... But the most noticable time would have been at school.. the classroom tends to be ok.. but I'm often stopping at the entrance to the hall.. Also, a tip for everyone.. Principals don't tend to appreciate you responding "Hai"... Keep smiling, V Keep Smiling!
monkeygirl
Actually, what's quite funny is that sometimes after I've been doing bag-work I'll bow to the bag. I've done that a few times...except I did it on purpose! 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard. LordBucket
I've mostly managed to avoid the habitual bowing phenomenon, at least in embarrassing places, but I studied for several years at a very early age and somehow managed to get the idea of bowing very deeply ingrained in my head. Probably most of you will know what I'm talking about, but most Americans will nod an acknowledgement, or a hello by quickly jerking their heads upwards. I've always communicated the same with a slower downwards head motion. I must have done it for ten years before I even noticed the difference. It throws a lot of people off. The worst time it happened was in a High School weight lifting class. The teacher gave me an upward nod, and I responded with a downward nod, and he just stood there staring at me like I was crazy.
