I got my first full contact fight in 7 weeks. Can anyone give me extra training advice.

I train 4 evening a week in kickboxing, but want to do some jogging on the other days. Anyone any ideas on how often I should run, how far etc, or any other ideas?

Thanks

Gerry

You should be running daily between 8/10 km.

Do your fitness work in the morning(running,sit-up,plyometrics ect) and you fight training at night (sparring, bag and pad work)

Fitness is everything so you had better push it more than 4 nights.

Good luck

Hi Gerry...and Welcome to KarateForums!

First you need to realize your goal. Are you trying to maintain a level of fitness that you are totally satisfied with? Are you trying to improve? If you are trying to MAINTAIN your present fitness level and you have absolutely ‘NO TIME’, four 30 minute sessions per week of exercising within your target heart rate will do. If you are trying to IMPROVE, you need to do more. The more you do, the more you improve. Five to six sessions per week is preferable for progression. Do not go overboard, but, do keep in mind that in order to improve, you must do more. There is a difference between maintenance and progression.

Spend some time on strength training. Might as well be as strong as possible in your weight division. Also many fighters punch & kick hard but very few are strategic. Here is where you can also spend some time working on the cerebral part of kickboxing.

And if all else fails....practice fancy footwork -

the harder you are to catch the harder you are to knock out!

think sport specific.

when you run or bike or swim etc. do it in a manner that mimics what you are doing.

distance running is for distance runners. you have to do things that will resemble your sport. ex. running at different speeds within 2-3 min. rnd with a 30-60 second rest. if it's a 3 rnd fight you have to do it for at least 3 rnds.

if it's your first fight worry more about fitness than strategy. most of this will go out the window in your first few fights because of nerves and inexperience. keep it simple.

I am aged 29, 6 foot tall, 80kilos, (175lbs), Defensive type fighter, good fast jab, good front roundhouse kick, about 3 years kickboxing experience. Good at moving off kicks. Im good at covering up when my oppents hit me with a hail of punches.I think I need to start running to ge stamina up asap, as I have not been doing any jogging,

Hi Gerry.

Yeah like the lads say, I think get the fitness up, running, swimming, whatever it takes. Also try and ramp up the kickboxing training, without getting hurt. Just keep in there, slogging away. Am also from Ireland (Dublin) so , best of luck in the fight!

You seem pretty well rounded so you should do ok. Just work on endurance and maybe a powerful front kick to surprise people when there unleashing a hail of punchs.

P.S. Adding strengh never hurts.
