sensei8 Posted June 12 Posted June 12 (edited) In the world of the MA there’s always that one constant in every MAists journey…the floor. We laugh/cry/celebrate on it, we clean it, and we decorate it, just to mention just a few. The floor is our salvation, and to some, a sanctuary. The floor is a magnificent beast that I depend on, that I respect, and that I can’t be without. In whatever the moment might be, the floor doesn’t care who I was, how much money I made, it doesn’t care about my accomplishments, my failures, doesn’t care if I was a good person or as bad person. Whenever I’m on the floor, either if it’s to train or teach or being involved in a testing cycle, I’m engaged in a constant pure test of might and will, and skill, and luck, and courage, and honor. I understand that through all of the trials and tribulations, the floor is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Sometimes I lose; it has made me a better person on and off the floor. Don’t ever take the floor lightly, and for the love of whatever or whomever you hold near and dearly, don’t ever disrespect the floor because it’s always been there for you no matter what. Then, the proof is in the pudding on the floor... In all seriousness, though, I agree Bob. Had a good day? Take to the floor. Had a bad day? Take to the floor. Get some work in. Let the floor teach you something. The floor constantly teaches me about balance. https://www.haysgym.com http://www.sunyis.com/ https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
sensei8 Posted July 3 Author Posted July 3 Nothing can be hidden from the floor. Especially when there’s a crowd watching. When there’s no one to watch, that’s when one has to be completely honest to themselves. Can’t do much for oneself if they’re not honest while on the floor. If one can’t be honest, get off and stay off the floor until one can. **Proof is on the floor!!!
WalterJ Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Not Karate, but Taijiquan (with martial arts intact) I remember one evening, after class was over, my Shifu (I am at least 6 inches taller than he is and likely had 50 pounds on him at the time) and I were doing free style push hands, and very relaxed and easily he did something, that in the form, is called High Pat on Horses back, and I went straight to the floor....I will never forget laying there, as he looked down and me and said..... Tung Hu Ling did that to me once........all in all the floor is a great tool for learning, and occasionally it is even humorous 1
