Hello

I'm looking for a new dojo. I have trained for many years and attained Shodan in Shorin Ryu karate. However, my Renshi is retiring and closing his school, so I need a new place to train.

I'm looking for a dojo near Baltimore, MD. Shorin Ryu would be ideal, Okinawan preferable.

I'm 59, in pretty good shape except for worn out knees - high kicks are a thing of the past - but otherwise ok.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Welcome to KF, John Moscato; glad that you’re here!! Sounds like you’ve an excellent background in the MA; can’t wait to read your contributions to our community here at KF.

Even though I’ve an uncle that lives in Baltimore, MD, I’ve no familiarity with any Okinawan Dojos. However, Yelp has a list of 10 Best Karate Schools in and around Baltimore,MD that might be of some interest to you.

Good luck on your search.

:)

Welcome to KF, @John Moscato.  Here's what I found with a Google search:

https://kenwoodkarate.com/ - says it's right there in Baltimore.

https://www.karateshorinkan.com/dojos.php?state=Maryland&country=USA - this one says they have a school in Baltimore as well.

https://www.threedragonskarate.com/ - this one's a Goju-Ryu school, if you're willing to go that route.

Thanks. I met with the first one and frankly couldn't get out of there fast enough. Still waiting for a response from the Shorinkan. I have a Goju Ryu school lined up if I can't find Shorin Ryu. It's not ideal but it's a solid operation with good people.

Hope your hunt finds you well and hopefully Google is your best friend.

Have you spoken to your Renshi about recommendations of where you and other students can go and reach out to?

Like I know my Shihan were to close, he would recommend clubs in the surrounding areas that were good and had similar standards. As he wouldn't want to let any of his students down in the training front.
