On a historical hockey note, it was the day 45 years ago (February 22, 1980) that the USA Olympic team defeated the USSR and advanced to the gold medal game, where they would also win.  In my opinion, the most iconic game ever played in American history.

The movie Miracle tells that story about the iconic game…USA vs USSR

The current playoff picture is this:  Top eight teams in the east in order are 1. Washington 2. Toronto 3. Florida 4. Tampa Bay 5. Carolina 6. New Jersey 7. Detroit 8. Columbus with NY Rangers, Boston, and Ottawa all two points behind Columbus.

In the west it is 1. Winnipeg 2. Vegas 3. Dallas 4. Edmonton 5. Minnesota 6. Los Angeles 7. Colorado 8. Vancouver with Calgary only one point behind Vancouver, Utah four points back of Vancouver, and St. Louis five back.

It is unlikely (not impossible) that anyone not listed would get into the playoffs.  The regular season ends April 17, seven weeks from today.  Of course, after today's games this information could change, but as of the present moment that is where it stands.

Knights had a back and forth battle on the ice with the Blackhawks. Knights came out with victory with the final score of 7-5.

GO KNIGHTS!!

My Blues just went on a tear getting 9 points out of their previous 5 games, so there may be a chance for them to make the playoffs.  I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for them!

The Penguins have dropped to last place in the Metropolitan.  Only 58 points in 63 games puts them at the second worst record in the east behind the Sabers (will the Sabers ever be OK?) at 54 points, but still well ahead of lowly Sharks who have 41 points in 62 games.  Can't remember the last time I saw the Penguins in last place this late in the season.

The groin injury that Matthew Tkachuk suffered in the Four Nations Tournament will sideline him for at least the rest of the regular season.  The Panthers are hopeful he will be ready to return when the playoffs start in April.
