I am new to the forum and I apologize as I am sure this topic has been brought up in previous posts. I am looking to purchase a new Gi - black (the color my club uses), European cut preferably, and with an elastic waist if possible. My first Gi was a century student Gi, very light weight and not particularly well made. I have followed it with an adidas Gi and a Tiger Claw Gi, both which are OK. I was hoping to find a Gi I really like this time.

I am 6’1 and weigh approximately 205 lbs. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A few questions...

What do you mean by European cut? Basically like slim fit in regular clothes?

How heavy do you want it? 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz?

How much do you want to spend?

I highly doubt you’re going to find an elastic waist in anything better than the free with signing up type uniforms. Heavier weight gis’ material gets pretty thick. Elastic in the waistband would get really uncomfortable.

JR - thanks for responding. In regards to your questions:

European cut generally refers to longer sleeves and pants. In comparison to a Japanese cut which is 3/4 length sleeves and pant legs.

Weight of the material - I think 10 or 12 oz would be good. I tend to be on the warmer side. I think a 14+ oz Gi might be too heavy.

I am willing to spend $100 a $200 for the Gi.

I had thought that the higher end Gis probably would not come in an elastic waist. I mentioned it because so far the traditional waist pants I have do not fit very well. However, that may be a function of a poorly designed Gi.

JR has a lot of experiance with all sorts and brands of Gi, I'm sure he will give good advice.

As far as the high waist "tape" pants, there is a bit of a knack to doing them up properly, have you used a pair for long or just tried a pair on?

Thanks Bulltahr!

I wear the traditional pants that I own, they just do not seem to fit as well.
