Freestyler
IMO I don't think any cardio matches rolling on the mats. It's a completely different kind of fitness, but my bet is to work on your anaerobic fitness to help. I'd go for plyometric exercises and interval training. You mean the first couple of months ? Expect to be on the buttom a lot. You mainly want to be working on escapes and controlling people. Don't go for submissions. Position comes before the submissions. When you can control someone, you can choose which submission you want to use; that's what control is. You will also find that using strength against technique is futile and quickly regard that and work on developing your technique.
Kensai
My Sensei says the only way to get better at Aikido, is do more Aikido. So in the same way, you have to constantly train in your art, like Freestyler said, its a different kind of fittness. I am hoping to start Judo soon, so best of luck in BJJ its a great system. Take Care.
Venezolano
Hello, my advice is that if you can, start working in your cardio condition, it's very important. Another thing, like others already said, is that don't desesperate on submissions, first it's the position, it's the BJJ's base "First get a position, and then in function of what movement he does, you apply a submission". And don't get frustrated when people make you tap, think in that everytime they make you tap, you can learn of that error that made you tap, so you aren't gonna make it again =). Good luck Valencia - Venezuela.
Severe Matburn
I agree with Venezolano...if you've got any friends you can roll with you should do so. Even if neither of you know any submissions just do it for as long as you can grabbing and pinning each other. Before I started formal training I rolled alot with my friends(i knew a bunch of submissions already though) I did an hour long gauntlet...1 friends and I go at it, i wint hen another comes and this continues for an hour. Believe me, grappling is much less tirering than striking so dun worry too much. The only thing you'd need to worry about is the damn mat rats who think they're friggin royce gracie and crank your limps off, lol. "razor elbows, killer knees, iron fists and monster kicks""Nice punch!!!, now let's see how well you punch with a broken arm"
