I have one of the heavy weight Meijin gis, and the drawstring has been binding - it twists up inside, making it hard to tighten and loosen. I've tried taking it out, flattening it (by rolling and by ironing.) That works for the first time I put it on, but then it goes back to twisting. I do not have the same problem with my middle weight uniform (Meijin Tropical.) I've also been tying it before washing to keep it from twisting up in the wash.

Any one have a similar experience with their uniform? Suggestions?

No. Can't help you there.

Maybe swap it for one of those soft cotton webbing style ones like on the Blitz pants.

I have had this problem with every gi I have ever owned, so far, except for my Century Kata Elite gi, which has very soft, thin webbing for drawstrings. That said, I solved it pretty easily by just taking out the drawstrings and replacing them with rope.

I wish I knew where to source drawstrings. The webbing drawstring bulltahr mentions tend to snap after a few months, it happened on my blitz trousers. I swapped the drawstring from and old pair and its been great.

I find a narrower drawstring works much better. Some bjj guys use paracord. Not sure what that would be like.

That was what I was going to suggest, maybe find some extra thick paracord. Back in the old days they just used rope so maybe you could find something like that at a home depot or something?

If you can find some army surplus, Brit army hot weather trousers then grab the webbing drawstring out of them. I still have one going strong, even after 3 hard years in a jungle environment where the stitching on my clothing would rot. The web belt still going strong.

Top tip, cheers. The webbing used on the blitz odachi is made of tissue paper, kind of put me off the material altogether.

Now I was in the military thu the 80's, so they may be harder to find these days if they have changed the design. Try and find the Tropical climate DPM trousers. they are top quality for sure.
