Clicking or Clanking Hips

Recommended Posts

Have you ever had clicking or clanking hips?

If so, do you have remedies or suggestions on how to fix it?

It seems that if clicking or clanking hips continue then pain will follow, is this true?

The remedy for this cause and effect in the hips, is due to insufficient strength in some muscles and more in others. This implies a lack of proper conditioning. As this is not something that can be fixed with stretching alone.

I believe the remedy of strength conditioning to be true as opposed to the flexibility theory.

What are your thoughts and experience with this clicking and clanky hip topic?

I've got hips that click a bit, especially when I roll them around in the crescent kick chamber motion. It sounds like there's a "catch" in them. I think if I spent more time stretching, it might help. I've started squatting again recently, so we'll see if it helps much at all.

My understanding is that stretching isn't the answer to fixing it, strengthening however is recommend.

Collagen supplements taken internally and creams externally are known to be beneficial.

Correcting techniques closer to perfection is another route, due to muscles could be unevenly conditioned as some are stronger or weaker than others.

Unknowingly cheating on techniques, that have not been detected can cause clicking in hips.

Having an experienced spotter at hand to readjust the kicking and supporting leg, is highly recommended; also paying attention to hip placement and correct body alignment.

As being aware of everything all of the time is highly unlikely. Having kicks on video, can help to find and fix the problem with an outside to inside perspective.

We are only as strong as our weakest link; in this case, it is to have equal muscle strength around the hips, equalizing the force surrounding them more efficiently and effectively.

I've had issues with my hips. Starting Taekwondo at age 36 (nearly 37) has me trying to do a lot of catching-up. I find myself needing to stretch daily (duh!) and also doing additional exercises to target my hip flexors. It's helping!

The quadriceps are something not recommend using in fact avoid using them at all except at the end of the kick.

Lifting the leg with anything but the quadriceps is recommend.

Lifting the leg with the hamstrings lower stomach and lower back and gluts will help improve higher stronger kicks.

Than pulling up the leg with quadriceps, rather lifting the leg with hamstrings is easier and faster with practice.

Maybe this is similar to what some people get in their knees. My knees click and crackle with every squat or bend. The sound it make is loud and easily heard but there has never been any pain or discomfort. Despite this it is a good idea to have it examined by a specialized doctor, to make sure there is no damage. This type of issue is likely more commonly experienced by people over 30 and usually can be improved with daily stretching and regular strength exercises for the body part concerned.

my right hip used to click, clank, and pop. it wasn't because of poor muscle tone or a lack of flexibility though- rather due to a structural abnormality of my socket combined with a tear of the cartilage over the acetabulum. now that I've had both the abnormality and cartilage repaired surgically, my hip doesn't pop, click, or clank any longer

I strained my hip yet again... either the aductor or the psoas, I think. I'll be talking to a physical therapist soon!
