How effective do you think this technique is? Would you ever use it instead of a punch?

More than the palm strike aspect to it I mean the finger "rake" part, sort of like this (not very good) example:

I didn't listen to the sound (no headphones) but personally I really wouldn't use that technique, but when you look at the video it was going straight forward to the sternum.

Which in a way wouldn't be very effective and places yourself at an increase risk of injury.

Although if one was to say use it towards a persons groin or in a Kake Uke fashion (ie. raking the throat or eyes) then i would use this technique.

I'd not use this technique because it's more of a fantasy rather than anything else, imho. Imho this technique success ratio against an active opponent is akin to swatting a fly with a chopstick.

Sure, I can see possibilities with it, but not more than a punch, which imho has a much higher success ratio.

Imho!

Well, try squeezing a fleshy part of your own body as hard as you can. When you get done saying "Ouch, that's really annoying."- consider how much harder you would have to do it to actually remove a chunk of flesh. If you had that kind of strength, the blunt force of the palm strike would be all you needed anyway.

Note, I will not be held liable for any flesh you rip from yourself.

I fully agree with what you guys say.

I'd not use it to strike, IMO. I am still a bit intrigued about the "raking the face" technique though. Part of me tells me it could do some damage, part if me tells me that's how 5 year old girls fight LOL. Thoughts?

My 5 year old daughter doesn't fight like that. then again, neither my 5 year old nor 3 year old daughter fight. My 3 year old will throw a hammer fist or an instep kick every now and again, but there's not much intent behind it. :)

Gee I wonder where could they have picked that up? hahaha

I'd only use it in a close struggle.across the face- not as a strike from punching distance.
