Headaches after MMA class

Ok, I have no issues with normal class. Even on the days where we do cardio/core workout before starting.

But on Monday I decided to stay for the MMA class after regular class. It was pretty intense. Hardcore cardio workout to start and then we went into takedowns and grappling.

My head started to just throb when we started doing the take downs.

My first thoughts are.

1: Being thrown to the ground repeatedly is hard on the head, even if you don't hit your head.

2: Not enough hydration.

Any input? :)

Being thrown IS hard on your head, especially if you are dehydrated. That said, if you know how to fall properly, and your partner is throwing you properly, it isn't so bad. Have you learned ukemi yet? I also recommend seeing a doctor to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.

Are you referring to rolling? (I still haven't learned all the japanese)

If you are, it wouldn't have worked for this class as my partner was coming down with me as it was practice for starting grappling.

Rolling is one kind of ukemi, but not all ukemi are rolls. Ukemi is "break-falling," and there are several ways of doing it.

Is it just the head, or are you experiencing any pain in the neck or the front of your shoulders? If you are experiencing upper body pain you could be breaking the fall improperly, and thus shocking the brain. However, that sounds unlikely if you were being helped to fall.

It could be dehydration; grappling can be surprisingly wearing, even if you already have martial arts experience and are otherwise quite fit. Plus, if you have added it on top of another work out it could be a case of over training. To reiterate things already said; perhaps see a doctor, and stay hydrated. Otherwise, all I can advise is try and take things at your own pace, until you are used to this extra training.

I know that I'm offering a far fetched idea...so...

My son, Nathan, often gets some pretty nasty headaches, often right after a basketball game/practice. One visit to the doctor, he's headache free!! What was his problem? TOO MANY SODA'S/Pepsi's!! Doctor joked and said that Nathan's blood system was 99% Pepsi!! He'd drink a six pack a day! Now, he's down to 1 can a day, and much more water, now, his headaches have become a thing of the past.

I used to drink that much soda, but not in a long time.

But I think it is similar. I drank some water, but not a ton. Enough for my standard karate class, but during the MMA class my mouth was completely dry.

And I had a large coffee on my way to the dojo.

So I'm leaning toward thinking that's the problem. I'll test it out this coming Monday by super hydrating and seeing how it goes.

@Wado - It's just a headache. I mean, I was certainly sore afterwards, but the main complaint was a throbbing headache.

Sounds like hydration is the issue then; try to get some more water in your system before and between training sessions, and try not to have any caffeine within a space of 2 hours before training. I find a piece of fruit, or some vegetables with high water content to have after training can help as well. Also, good luck; it's never nice to have this happen, and I hope it's not put you off trying again.
