Static stretching has always been a problem for me. I can kick over my head when warmed up, but I have achieved this by dynamic stretching. Back in '95, I was stretching in class and something in my left hip just gave. I went from 12 inches above the floor to about 3 inches above the floor in side splits. Hurt like the dickens, and I have had hip issues since. Dynamic stretching is great for increasing cold flexibility. Check out the Health and Fitness section here on KF. There are some great stretching threads to help out.
