jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 my neighboor is 8 years old and he is a black belt in tkd, under raymond mourad, canadian olympic champion, i think thats a little ridiculous "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
Kensai Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Thats a worry JJ fighter. But i think that ALL systems have this problem from TKD to Mauy Thai. These "Sensei" tar the name of MA by giving these kids BB's that could not fight there way out of wet paper bag. Its not just a TKD problem, mcdojo's or black belt factories are a problem with every MA.
TJS Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 Muay Thai definetly does not have that problem because they do not give belts. TKD Is definetly not the only stlye with the problem, there are good and bad schools of every style but i would say TKD has the most Mcdojos by far. When was the last time you saw an 8 year old or someone who does not have an extreme amout of skill get a BJJ black belt for example? It dosent happen.
jiu-jitsu fighter Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 thats very true tjs, actually its a rule in bjj that you will not be recognized as a bb unless you are 16 years of age( and you rightfully deserved one) these mcdojos must be stopped "When we go to the ground, you are in my world, the ground is the ocean, I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim"
Kensai Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 I disagree, yea sure it does not happen that often at the moment. But NO style is Mcdojo prof. At the rate Roron(sp) Gracie is commercialising BJJ its going to happen. And at any rate, BB given to ANYONE that does not deserve them whether they are 6 or 26 makes it a mcdojo. Oh and about MT I know they dont have belts, but they do have recognition of skill, and this is what can become mcdojoised. If MT goes to the Olympics then that record of un-mcdojoisation is gone.
monkeygirl Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 8-year-old black belt? That's just wrong. I've seen some of these kids before at tournaments. In fact, my friend had to go up against two of them in a tournament last July. The division was 14 and under, and my friend didn't turn 15 until October. The problem is, these 8-year-olds were not judged on the same level as the older competitors (my friend and a 13-year-old girl). If any 13 or 14 yo. had performed like those 8 yo.s did, I'm pretty sure they would've gotten much lower scores. Sure, they were great for 8 year olds, but they were beyond compare of the older competitors. This wasn't the kids' fault, but promoting kids to that level gives a false sense of confidence. The kids think "hey, I beat two big kids in a fair competition", when it wasn't fair at all. They think "I have a black belt, I can defend myself". They don't know that they can't do anything to a 300 lb agressor. The end result is very dangerous. 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
Kirves Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 8-year-old black belt? That's just wrong. That's not just wrong. It's ridiculous. A black belt of a 'do' art should know the basics of the concept of 'do' (i.e. 'tao'), that is, (s)he should be able to live and teach zen philosophy to students. That's why all the arts I've ever been in contact with personally, have had a minimum age for black belt. The lowest minimum age I've seen has been 18 years. My guess is that the child black belts are something that the americans came up a couple of decades ago, when the symbolism of a black belt status wasn't that common a knowledge in there? Someone have a different idea?

No art is McDojo proff your right, But right now TKD is in the spotlight for McDojos IMO. I think it will be very hard for BJJ to become a McDojo..from whati know they are pretty tough as far as abilitys and promotions.

I wouldn't live a "zen" life anyway, there are things about Zen that go against my religious beliefs. Ken ChenaultTFT - It does a body good!
Kensai Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 So was TKD. I dont think the south Korean Army is a breeze, nor was REAL TKD and about 10% of TKD dojang.
