gronis Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I've seen something like this thread before but it was old and not so up to date. What other sites related to martial arts do you frequent?
Spartacus Maximus Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 As far as discussion forums go, this one is by far the best one I have ever found. Just as in the real world, martial arts always attracts some weird critters. From the very beginning Internet newsgroups, chat rooms and forums have largely been polluted by endless style wars, violence geeks with paranoid fantasies or immature keyboard warriors. For every serious post or attempt at discussion, there was always nearly ten times as many post consisting of negative judgement, accusations or other non-constructive immature comments. Some of the boards I have come across are so infested with trolls and rampant stupidity that it is impossible to have any discussion at all.
Spodo Komodo Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I used to be a regular on Karate Underground which was a lovely place, like here but with more of a Karate focus. Unfortunately the guy who ran it stopped for some reason which is when I started coming here. I also frequent Martial Arts Planet but discussion on there can be somewhat robust, especially when styles and lineages are discussed.
Shotokannon Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I'm very surprised to find that this forum is the only martial-arts focussed website I could find which has a vibrant, active community with good moderation and best of all, Free!Just as a matter of interest I actually make websites for a living, wouldn't it be great if out there, there was a website purely dedicated for Martial Arts?I'm talking about a cross between a site like this, where we have a forum, and a site like martialtribes.com where friends can be added and interacted with? Lupin1 Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I go on reddit a lot and frequent the MartialArts and Karate subreddits. MartialArts tends to be mostly people who attack and belittle any discussion about anything other than BJJ, Thai Kickboxing, and MMA. There's a lot of "this style is better than that style" and "that style is completely impractical" talk and it's generally a pretty negative place for any talk of traditional arts. The karate subreddit is a little bit better, but you still get your rouge person who'll come out to talk about the uselessness of kata or tradition every time you try to have a discussion.I'll make some comments here and there on those sites and maybe lurk on a few others, but for serious posting and discussion I always come back here because it's one of the few sites that's very well moderated to foster respectful discussion and an acceptance that all arts are equally valid for their own different purposes.

They're not interested in intelligent discussion, only sowing chaos and discord by attacking everything...KF is rare in that aspect; the KF staff have some excellent troll slayers... chiliphil1 Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Indeed it is tough to find other sites to post on. I also find myself posting nowhere but here. I have tried various other sites, chat rooms, etc but I would always find that it was a huge measuring contest about which branch of MMA was better than the other. I have no ill feeling toward MMA but I prefer to study a more traditional art, not many these days seem to want to do that. I try to learn on what I call the "practical way" If something is beneficial for the situation I use it, if it is detrimental, I do not use it. Simple. I like kata, they are enjoyable and keep me in practice. I am not interested in fighting, I am interested in self betterment. Bulltahr Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I tried a few other sites also and found that they all seemed to be "MMA rules the streets and trad styles suck" type of thing. Respect, in general seemed to be a rare thing indeed.KF has what I want in a forum, helpful advice and positive, repectful discussions.Me likey! I got downvoted to oblivion once for daring to suggest reading or researching different styles might yield better answers. Then I find /r/taekwondo to be a little simplistic..
