My Sensei Tested on Okinawa, Today

Recommended Posts

My Sensei is currently on Okinawa with his Sensei--Eddie Bethea--to train at the honbu dojo and experience the culture of the homeland of karate. On this visit, he was asked to test for Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) in front of Nakazato Minoru Sensei. Of course, he passed! :D

Here he is with Nakazato Sensei:

Here is a video of him running Chinto during the test:

I'm very proud of his accomplishment, and proud to be his student, so I'm bragging a little :P

You've every right to brag over your Sensei; he's special to you across the board. Congrats to your Sensei for earning his Godan; well deserved!! Hopefully, your Sensei will tell you all the many stories while he was visiting Okinawa.

To Nakazato Sensei and to your Sensei....

That is very similar (small things) to the Chinto I practice, and he did GREAT!

Very well done kata :) So was your sensei there merely to train, and this was a surprise invitation?

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

We kind of suspected his Sensei would have him test, but we didn't know for sure. He really just went over there to train, and at some point, his Sensei told him he was testing.

Way back in June of 1978, sensei Kuda Yuichi, the Okinawan head of our system, came to little 'ol Havre, MT at the invitation of my instructor, to work with us for 3 WHOLE WEEKS!!! It was intense, and GREAT!

I was a 1st Kyu bown belt and still had a few months to go for my shodan test, but at the end of Sensei Kuda's visit he called us up one by one starting with my instructor, ran us thru various things he wanted to see..and I received my shodan! It was totally unexpected.
