There is a new Martial Art Studio opening on my block. called Cahill's Functional Fitness and Self Defense. Says it will teach "Street Combat JuJitsu" as the style.

From the little I can find, It seems like the studio owners Michael Cahill own style mix. Mostly Small circle JuJitsu targeted for self defense, but not really sure.

So, With that said. Anyone heard of this style, or have any experience in Small circle JuJitsu, or it's derivatives? I might just stop in just to see what it is about. I've been thinking about mixing it up some anyway.

Have not heard of it, but it might be worth a look. Many times, hearing that its someone's own style sends up red flags, but its not always a bad thing. They may have some solid experiences that they have built the system on, and could be worth a look.

Let us know if you check it out!

Agreed, I'm leery based on that, but as you said might be worth a look. So will do.

Small Circle Jujitsu was created by Prof. Wally Jay-a viable self defense system with valid results. Carl Beaver studied under Prof. Jay and founded Jujtisu America along with Jay and Willy Cahill-a Judoka. Ed Melough is listed on the Jijitsu America website as a certified Jujitsi America Instructor-he is apparently Michael Chahill's instructor so I see a valid lineage here.

It would be a great opportunity to learn Small Circle...you should check it out!

From what I'm reading here, and from what Ninja_ninjanurse has posted, I, too, think it might be worth the look!! Having said that, look at many classes of all different ages and ranks to get a gest of the style and instructor(s).

Look forward to read what you find out!!

If it's a small circle school with a good lineage, you're in great shape! Defiantly go. That said, I too (as people have pointed out) leery of the way it's presented. I would normally think a small circle school would have that more prominently mentioned, but that might be a small thing.

As always, check it out and go from there. Keep and open mind, but always, always, always ask:

Does this make sense for what I'm here for?

So, I did happen to stop by as Friday was it's opening day. It was a relocation for more room and a better area for a club. Anyway I talked with Michael Chahill after his first class, and he answered a few questions including the question about the lineage.

Apparently, When Prof. Wally Jay passed away he left the system to 4 inheritor's Lee Eichelberger, his son Leon, Ron Ogi, and Ed Melaugh. my understanding from what I was told is Ed Melaugh did not join Leon when he created his organization and elected to be under his own banner, but did not have rights to the SCJ name. Hence Street Combat JuJitsu. So yes, the lineage is valid.

Anyway, I did tell him up front that I had Martial Arts experience at the Yudansha level in Goju. So, he invited me to join the next class that was happening that day, so I did. And it was quite the experience. Considering that I had an Idea about the basics, He jumped right into the meat of stand-up grappling, a few quick demos, finger locks, counters, break falls, and take downs. After that it was some new territory for me. Ground grappling.

Overall, The hardest part was giveing it a fair shakedown and not using my reactions from my style. But I did see many opportunities from my blocks, were I can add it into what I know already.

Needless to say I'm pondering the Idea of joining up for a while at least, like I said many techniques look like they would mix well and it will give me a basic ground game.

Good report, Karate_John. I'm thinking that if ground grappling, for the moment, is unfamiliar territory for you, then I see really no reason to not join their school. Another way to increase your MA betterment.
