Hey guys, I'm planing on getting a heavyweight Tokaido gi and I'd like to make sure I get the right size. I'm 5'6" 155 lbs. One chart I've seen indicates size 3.5 or size 4. Does this sounds about right? Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the forum!

That sounds about right. I had a 4.5 Tokaido, but at 6'1" it was a bit shorter on the body than I would have liked. A 3.5 or 4 would probably be a good fit for someone your size, but everyone is built differently, so it's hard to say for certain. In all likelihood, you'll need to have the sleeves and pant-legs hemmed.

I would highly recommend contacting whomever you choose to buy the Gi from. Everything I have read says that Tokaido is made smaller than their competitors, if you wore say a size 5 in Century you would be a 4 in Tokaido.

Whomever you are dealing with should be able to help you out but from your description the size you're looking at seems about right.

I have a size 4 tokaido but if you are worried about sizing then go for a bigger size. Like our new member of the month said contacf the company. Tell them height weight and maybe whether you are big (as in overweifght or über muscles) or small.

I am 5"7'ish but have a belly so I bought up and adjusted the gi first now perfect

Not all Tokaido gi are the same. Are you talking about the original, Japan-made Tokaido heavy weight gi that runs about US$250-$280? Those run small. I'm pretty sure a size 3.5 wouldn't work for you, but the size 4 might be okay.

If you're talking about a China-made Tokaido gi that sells for around US$120-$150, they tend to be cut larger, so the 3.5 might be good.

Of course, any advice we give is general. Everyone's body is different, and everyone has a different idea of how they want a gi to fit.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been checking posts as often as I used to!

I'm 5.5" and I bought a Tokaido gi (something or other gold) when I was 155lbs in a size 4. I think it was one of the China made ones. It's relatively loose in the body compared to the other brands I have, but I don't mind that. being only 5.5" I had to get the sleeves and pants taken up, but again, I'm more concerned about the fit of the body.

Overall I think a 4 is a good size- that's what all my other gis are (Arawaza, Adidas, Shureido, SMAI etc.). With a 3.5 you may find that (depending on your body shape) it restricts some movements.

Hope that helps!

Sorry this is so late, but today I purchased myself a brand new extra heavy Tokaido Ultimate.

I'm prettymuch the same size as you, maybe one or 2 inches taller. normally I wear size 4 gi, but for this particular style I needed 4.5, almost 5.

I hope you're as stoked about your new gi as I am!
