Hey advfhorn,

Thank you for posting. Here are some resources for you to check out:

http://sioutreach.org/learn/friends

http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinfo/problems/depression/self-harm.aspx (search "What can I do if I know someone who self-harms?" - it's about half-way down the page)

http://www.helpguide.org/articles/anxiety/cutting-and-self-harm.htm#helping

I would read through them and use them to guide you. You can only do the best you can. The weight of the world doesn't fall squarely on your shoulders. :) You are not responsible for them. You are just a person trying to help.

These types of situations can be difficult, and different people will respond to different approaches. It's not a one-size-fits-all type of thing. You can't make assumptions - about the person, their parents, their instructor, etc. - you can only approach it in an open-minded way and, again, do your best.

Good luck.

It's interesting to see the different attitudes towards this problem, I would expect an "old-school" Sensei to just tell the parents and be done with it...

No one in this thread has expressed that sentiment. I would encourage everyone to assume best faith. Thank you.

Patrick

Thanks all. I am only a student at this dojo of 1.5 yrs and this teen is a white belt (5-6 months). I told my Sensei. She is a quiet girl who you would never expect. My Sensei was shocked when I told him who. He said he wanted to see for himself and he worked in a drill the following week (conditioning and checked our arms were red). The rest is up to him. He will do the right thing. I have heard the teen say she fights with Mom a lot and is bad in Math. When I was a rebellious teen I yelled, screamed and punched doors and walls when I was mad and smoked cigarettes. I guess ech generation has their own thing. Thanks all. I am real sensitive since my neighbors teen hung himself last sept. The impact of that will make me hug my own son everyday. I would want to know if it were my kid.

Thank you for updating us, advfhorn. I'm glad that you informed your Sensei. It's a difficult position to be in but the fact that you care says a lot about you.

Thanks,

Patrick
