I'm curious to find out what terms you use for different techniques in your style of karate.

Especially in relation to the interpretation of the japanese terms.

For instance Yoko Geri which would translate to Yoko = Side & Geri = Kick. Now you can take it to either the literal translation and you perform and side kick. But one other interpretation is that the "yoko" portion of the term is where you aim for the kick. So therefore a Roundhouse Kick to the ribs.

What terms do you use for these techniques/stances

Short Stance

Deep Lunging Stance (Forward Stance)

Lower Stance (Shiko Dachi) + Its variations

Cat Stance

Half-Lunging stance

Upper Block

Middle Block

Lower Block

Upper & Lower Block

Middle & Lower Block

Outward Deflecting Block

Inward Deflecting Block

Knife Hand Block

Front Kick

Groin Kick

Roundhouse Kick (Ribs)

Roundhouse Kick (Head)

Reverse Roundhouse Kick

Back Kick

Side Kick

Knee-Joint Kick

Well, without pictures I'm a bit hazy on a few of them, but here's what I have:

Short Stance = I'm not sure what kind of position you're talking about with this one

Deep Lunging Stance (Forward Stance) = Zenkutsu-dachi

Lower Stance (Shiko Dachi) + Its variations = Shiko-dachi

Cat Stance = Neko-ashi-dachi

Half-Lunging stance = Shizentai-dachi

Upper Block = Jodan-uke

Middle Block = Chudan-uke

Lower Block = Gedan-barrai

Upper & Lower Block = I assume you mean doing these at the same time? We don't have this one in our system.

Middle & Lower Block = Morote-uke

Outward Deflecting Block = Chudan-uchi-uke (I think--depends on what you mean)

Inward Deflecting Block = Chudan-soto-uke (I think--depends on what you mean)

Knife Hand Block = Shuto-uke

Front Kick = Mae-geri

Groin Kick = Mae-geri to the groin (although we know it's called kinteki-geri)

Roundhouse Kick (Ribs) = Chudan-mawashi-geri

Roundhouse Kick (Head) = Jodan-mawashi-geri

Reverse Roundhouse Kick = Ushiro-mawashi-geri

Back Kick - Ushiro-geri

Side Kick - Yoko-geri

Knee-Joint Kick = Kansetsu-geri

I assume with short stance = hidari shizentai?

Deep Lunging Stance (Forward Stance) = for us is Junzuki Dachi

The rest is basically the same as Wastelander.

That which does not kill us, must have missed us.

Inward Deflecting Block = Chudan-soto-uke (I think--depends on what you mean)

This is probably where many are going to differ.

In some systems "Soto" (Lit. outside) refers to a block in which the arm travels from the inside to the outside. Were as "Uchi" (Lit. inside) refers to a block travelling from outside to inside – (or it can also be the part of the arm you are blocking with IE the outside or the inside)

In other systems, it’s the opposite way round - as a result of where the technique emanates from.

Generally speaking, as Karate is a gendai system, most of the terminology is the same (with a few exceptions).

With older systems it gets a little more complicated as the terminology is quite archaic.

Short Stance is often called 'Hourglass Stance'. It is Sanchin Dachi.

Wastelander: Middle & Lower Block is at the same time yes.

Ah, yes, we call that Sanchin-dachi, as well. Thanks!
