Nidan Melbourne Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Here is a video of me doing the Goju-Ryu Kata Suaprenpei. What do you all think? It was just me practicing the kata and I still have a lot of work to do on it. It was kindly filmed by my girlfriend.
Karate4Life Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 OSU!You are showing some really good and honest sweaty effort here which I really appreciate. You display good kime and determination, and your kata is "alive". It's not beautiful which in my opinion is a plus - practicing kata for the sake of looking "good" or "elegant" is missing the point IMveryHO. You are asking for feedback, so from my POV this is a very solid interpretation of Suparinpei kata. What I'm missing in your sanchin dachi, however, is stability. It's hard to judge by just watching your performance in a video, but your sanchin dachi looks unstable. Have you tested it against resistance, or someone trying to sweep you? Further, do you practice bunkai?Good job!OSU! Just Karate

Yes I practice Bunkai, why do you ask?

Karate4Life Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 OSU!Yes I practice Bunkai, why do you ask?I'm asking because (naturally) I see differences in your performance and the way I've learned it myself or have seen it in other dojos, so I'd be interested in learning more about the bunkai that you use in your dojo. I have found that even within one and the same style and org there can be minor differences in the way a kata is done, and vast differences in the way the kata is interpreted and bunkai is practiced. Do you by chance have a video contaning your bunkai? Or of any other kata that you do?OSU! Just Karate

Considering it is considered the last kata in the style. I don't have a video of any bunkai that my school does. don't forget to take into account i am relatively new to performing this kata. so Timing was off

Others have given you their advice, and I'd like to say...solid advice!!You're was fine, and as you say...you're new to this kata. Time heals all things, and in time, you'll shake out the cobwebs and polish the mettle, in and out!!You'll be just fine!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
