Who thinks they are a "tough mudder" then?

I've been invited by a friend to join him and a few others as a team for this event next year!

It looks mad and a huge amount of fun!

I just had to share!

Love the training video, and the training done gave me a few ideas as well.!

Enjoy!

Good luck, you'll have a great time. Several friends and one the Dojo's I train at do it regularly. Do it while you can, I feel left out. Knees and hips wont let me do it. :(

If you believe in an ideal. You don't own it ; it owns you.

hehehe... ;-)

Juts to be clear I have replied with a maybe!

Sure it looks fun and the dates he has offered are 'warm' weather, ... but they are also close to a possible Shodan grading!

...we'll see, it does look totally nuts'o! gotta be honest!

I did it and I'll admit that it's the most FUN that I'll never want to have again!

I recommend it - its a cool experience - but definitely train for it otherwise it will be a miserable day. I prepared for several months and had a blast.

Good luck !

I've also been asked to compete for the one in Scotland next year, I've always thought it would be a cool thing to do, but next year the serious work needed in going for Shodan will begin for me, I just don't know if I can fit in training for this too. Going for my black belt is priority for me, so probably won't do it. But one day, it's definitely on the list of things to do before I'm 40. :P

... next year the serious work needed in going for Shodan will begin for me ...

You as well!

Good luck, for the grading 'M'!

:bowofrespect:

My reasoning is much the same as you to be honest, but its not a 'to much to fit in or to much to do' concern.

I see it as a way of adding to the training, it is after all excessive, stamina, character building and a certain upgrade to inner spirit.

My worry is the injury risk, I already follow a specific art where major injury is a constant worry! The idea of doing a zip wire or wall climb and loosing a finger or breaking a bone that close to teh grading is not that appealing to be honest!

;) I'm older now and although I may have started my MA journey when I was 18 ... that was a long time ago, and now I am on that final stretch to getting Shodan, I really don't want to mess it up!

( ... :) as always I can't speak to other systems grading, only my own)

I'm told a Shodan grading is unofficially a week long affair, (you are watched all week) then you go for the 'grading' at the end of the week which is about 6 hrs long and is finished with knockdown bouts!

One guy in the dojo explained that when it was over, he had 18 fights to get his Shodan!

... but still its looks totally insane and that is truly appealing!

p.s.

I normally go off roading in 4x4s, so to do something along them lines ... but without a car is just crazy!

Good luck, to you too! :bowofrespect: Although I more than likely won't be doing the grading till the following year, I just meant the syllabus work would be starting in earnest for me. I'll be sitting for 3rd Kyu in the next two weeks and all thing being well, sitting for 2nd in December and 1st in May 2015 which would allow me to sit the Dan grade in November, but I feel 6 months between 1st Kyu and 1st Dan is not sufficient so I'll probably hold off till June or November 2016.

i had the same thought myself, that the training for TM could only benefit my Karate training but like you the risk of injury is too great for me to take right now. I know I could injure myself stepping of a kerb, but something like this increases the risk far too much for me to take it.

:o :o Wow! That's a lot! We have sparring at the end of the grade too but by all accounts it doesn't determine whether you pass or fail, that's already been decided, it's more to see how you fare on the floor.

My club was going to do it, if enough members signed up. However as I have issues with my joints, I couldn't (I've been off training for the last 6 months so not sure if they did do it in the end).

Would have liked to though, looks fun :)

Ah yes let me clear that up, its more a spirit thing, rather than just win win and win some more!

You are to try, you are to want to win, NOT cruise, but its more if you get knocked down, make sure you get back up again and carry on! ... spirit!

Looking over the 'mudder' site this looks to be an American idea and the training video is one such contestant/local nut job/insane dude/complete mad man/ (insert your own classification) going through a simple day...

Starting with a bucket of cold water on a winters day outside in his bear feet running to the gym to do some serious work!

... totally nuts, love it!

Yeah I like that video too, although I don't think the little bucket with a few ice cubes in it can prepare you for the shock of plunging into the big icy pool for real  My friend competed in this years Scottish one, I seen a video of her going through the obstacle with all the electric wires hanging down "electroshock therapy" I think it's called, she got buzzed by one of the wires and her legs buckled right from under her, she landed face first in the mud
